In present-day navies we see that they have ceremonies and recognition of events like when a ship crosses the equator, or the international dateline, and so forth. Not really official, just a fun tradition that has become part of the naval tradition and culture.

What sorts of traditions and culture do we imagine have established themselves in Starfleet? We've gotten small tastes of Starfleet slang (i.e. "Captain dunsel"). It's a vast starfaring organization that's been around for awhile by Kirk's era, and surely they have something like that going on down on the lower decks?

For example: In the early days of the exploration and colonization of the solar system (before interstellar travel), members of the UN Space Force would get a distinctive tattoo ringing their upper arm when they had been on a mission that circumnavigated the Sun. Many young recruits would end up buying a round of drinks when they failed a "ring check" in the favorite UNSF watering holes on Luna.

Tradition or uniform/grooming regulation? :) I'm guessing it began as one, and became the other.

It was first a tradition when you graduated from the academy and later on it became regulation

That is, at the end of their first year of garrison training in San Francisco? :p

'Crossing the Line/Crossing the Zone' - the ship's crew went into the Neutral Zone (awards/ceremonies for both Klingon and Romulan depending on the era)

Farthest Star - given to the crew of ships that venture outside the Federation

Where No One Has Gone Before award - for those 'other' trips (center of the galaxy, etc...)

Survivor - survive the destruction of a ship/station (two or more Survivor awards marks you as a bad luck charm)

There was a scene in DS9, where there was a ceremony concerning a burned out phaser component. It took place in the crew mess, and the component was placed up on a shelf with a degree of "hoop-la."

A the beginning of Generations, there was a holodeck party to celebrate Worf's promotion a step in rank. First time we saw anything like it, but that (or something like it) could easily be a Starfleet tradition.

^Does that include pushing Beverly Crusher into the water?

No. That was Data failing at appropriate spontaneity.

If Data was trying to be funny, he suceeded. Given Beverly's love life it was probably the first time she'd been wet in years.

    Oh snap!

Sad but true though, considering the last known time she had was her grandma's "ghost" lover in Sub Rosa. Then Riker-Odan (would that be Rodan?) before that.

Proving once more that Data truly is fully functional.
