I loved it. I will admit I had not started watching the TV shows until this year but sirs and maams, I have watched EVERY EPISODE EVERY MOVIE EVERY FAN MADE MOVIE AND READ EVERY BOOK..lol I love star trek and I consider myself a true trekkie. I loved the movie and as long as people can realize that the movie is NOT Wrath of Kahn, it is an awesome experience. Especially in the IDK 72 FOOT SCREENS with some kind of bad ass future sound system.....in 3d...

 

I could just listen to him playing Captain Exposition all day long!

I loved the film and found nothing wrong with it. The fanservice was great, but didn't overwhelm the story - people who have no idea what a gorn is won't be bothered.

All in all, awesome, although it could have been a little longer...

I have no problems with it. I thought it was really good, though I will admit that I didn't *love* it like I did ST09. Still, I'm planning a second viewing with my dad next week.

So let's have a positive thread which starts by belittling those who have different opinions. Sigh.

I liked the film aside from the Khan scene, but this sort of attitude - albeit I think more flippant than most examples - is tiresome.

This is a fine way to frame this thread, and I'm quite happy to see a thread like this exists on TrekBBS amidst the expected unhappiness. Acknowledging that some negative reactions to the movie are far overblown is definitely fair.

I very much liked this movie. I think parts of it were overdone, but it's also a summer popcorn movie and anyone wanting to see longwinded discussions of the Prime Directive or trade negotiations with the Nausicaans is completely misguided. Of course the 2nd film would take on the most iconic villain of TOS -- this is the Batman Begins/Dark Knight model, and one that I fully expect the new Superman movies to do as well.

It was a solid *movie* first and foremost; well-acted, well-paced, and well-written. Was it good Star Trek? Certainly better than any of the Next Generation films, and, IMHO, better than any of the TOS films other than Wrath of Khan.

 

Yes, I loved the movie! Virtually everything about it was fantastic for me! I loved the cinematography, the music, the action scenes as well as the character moments. And, the story was a lot of fun!

I definitely loved it. Will be going to see it again tonight.

A lot of the complaints that people levied I ended up feeling were just baseless now that I've seen the movie. I liked how Carol Marcus was used (undies aside, that was gratuitous), I like how Bones was used, I liked the story and the pacing, I thought everything was very well explained. And it DEFINITELY felt like "real Trek."

 

It was simply amazing! I loved this one probably a bit more than the last one. I'm going to see it in 35mm this weekend, but a couple nights ago I saw it in IMAX 3D and it was mind-blowing!

Beyond the visuals, I have to echo the praise for Chris Pine. He wasn't Pine as Kirk or Pine as Shatner as Kirk. He was playing James Kirk, plain and simple. The beginning sequence on Nibiru into the credits, for one, was simply outstanding and made me feel like I was back in 1982, discovering TOS on TV and feeling the excitement of meeting a new group of friends.

I actually found myself tearing up a bit after the warp core scene.

This was not only a great Star Trek movie, but a great movie, period. I saw Iron Man 3 a couple weeks ago, and as a movie itself, this blows STID blows it away.

 

Alice Eve in her undies - another reason to love the film.

 

This. Iron Man 3 was a totally enjoyable experience while I was watching it, but it really wasn't that memorable and a LOT of things bugged me afterwards (and I'm not one of the ones who took offense to the Mandarin reveal). That movie really had no heart.

It's not like Iron Man is incapable of heart, either. The defining moment for that whole franchise is the press conference just after Tony Stark was rescued, when he says "I saw young Americans killed by the very weapons I created to defend them and protect them," and you see the shame cross his face. And then later in the movie when he's talking about realizing his destiny. Those were great moments of pathos, and the biggest reason why the first Iron Man stands head and shoulders above 2 and 3, because all attempts at pathos in those movies felt really forced.

STID is so much better than Iron Man 3 for the same reason: the pathos in the character work feels really real, and just works. It has a heart (not to mention some fantastic action and lots of humor to boot).

 

Watched it, loved it, could even have sat through an extra half hour to have a longer ending or give some of the more rushed scenes room to breath if you know what I mean. Excellent movie.

I loved it! For what it is, lol! I wrote a review in another post here if you care to read my thoughts.

 

Oh god I love this film !!! I wasn't surprised about the villains true identity but happy it was one if the best villains of Star Trek franchise brilliant . Always wanted a big budget Star Trek movie and now we have two !!! Brilliant and a villain who has not been killed off !!

 

STID is perfectly summed up by 10 seconds in the film: when Kirk says to Spock: 'I want you to know why I came back for you', and Spock responds by saying: 'Because you are my friend', with a tear falling from his eye... Those 10 seconds have more power, more heart, more beauty and more soul than ANY movie I have seen in the last 10 years... Those 10 seconds define STID for me... I thank JJ for creating such perfection to add to the ST universe...

 

I totally didn't cry during that scene.

 

Loved it.

The effects: great.
The music: great.
The acting: great.
The interpersonal relationships and chemistry: great.
The villains: great.
The humor/comedic moments: great.
Even the continuity with the rest of the franchise and the Prime timeline was stellar.

The believable sounding dialogue and arguments between Pike and Kirk and Kirk and Spock? Enterprise NX-01 and Enterprise Ring Ship models on the desk of Admiral Marcus? Keeping the Eugenics Wars as a late 20th century series of conflicts in spite of catcalls over the years to retcon them as something happening decades later? The mention of Mudd related to the most recent Countdown comic books? Even McCoy's De Kelley-inspired short sleeved sickbay tunic was a fun touch.

 

Absolutely awesome. Responsive to criticism of the first, builds on it, knocked it out of the park.

 

Loved it. Dying to see it again. Anyone else think they put a lot more love into the shots of the Enterprise? I mean, the entire first movie, we barely got anything resembling a full-on beauty shot. In ID, there are several. Flying towards the volcano was awesome, but my favorite is the top-down shot of the alien drawing turning into the ship flying though space, and then warping away... absolutely stunning starship porn. And that warp effect is seriously awesome in 3D.

 

This is now my favorite "Star Trek" movie. The feel was right -- not too serious, not too deep, but still real danger and high stakes. And the characters! I don't know how they could be in better hands -- the actors, and the writers and producers. The pacing was amazing. The optimism everyone talks about was there at the end, as well as mercy. This was the first "Star Trek" movie that was truly epic. I honestly teared up at the end.
