This sounds like it's the first TNG film, Generations. However, the caves don't ring any bells. I'm wondering if that might be a Voyager episode? Not sure of the title.

One problem though. In Generations, the crew is in the Enterprise as it crashes, not on the planet.

It was in the movie Generations. But it was supposed to have originally happened in the TV episode "Descent Part 2."

So the ship was supposed to crash while the skeleton crew was on board and the rest were on the planet looking for data and the borg?

The only thing I know about it is what Brannon Braga said in an interview -- that he wanted to do the crash we saw in Generations in Descent, but the special FX guys assured him they wouldn't be able to make Braga happy with the results on the TV budget, so Braga saved that idea for the first TNG movie.

Actually, in their Generations commentary track Which every fan should hear) Braga and Moore had plans to separate the saucer and crash-land it in an episode called "All good things," which would have been the sixth season cliffhanger where Decent is now. The Enterprise was to be sent home as a museum ship, but something goes wrong, they separate, crash, and that's the cliffhanger.
