And there were 18 years between Eric Idle playing the English bike rider in European Vacation (1985) and reprising the same bike rider in the TV-movie sequel to the Vacation series Christmas Vacation 2 (2003). :)

Make sure to include Diane Keaton as his wife Kay. And Richard Bright, who played Michael's personal muscle Al Neri in both II and III.

^ Done ... and thanks for the (presumptive) record holder, sojourner. I was wondering if we'd find someone with a bigger timeframe. This has been fun. If anyone else has others to add, feel free to add them!

Oops! Talia Shire (Connie) in all three Godfather films.

Stallone: 16 years between Rocky V and Rocky Balboa.

JD's original question was longest time between a character's first appearance and his/her last appearance. The question isn't asking what's the longest gap between appearances.

Leonard Nimoy's Spock is still at the top of the list with 47 years (1966-2013).

Yeah, we changed the question to one that was more interesting.

It's different, though, if you get to see that character grow, mature, and age over much (some) of that timeframe. To me, the most noteworthy (perhaps even jarring) aspect of having Luke, Han & Leia back is not that I first saw them back in the late 70s, but that I haven't seen them (production wise) since the early 80s.

Or to put another way, consider the people I met when I first started high school. It'd be more ... noteworthy if I was suddenly reintroduced to the old acquaintances I haven't seen since graduation as opposed to the few I've kept tabs on in the years since.

And besides, Nimoy's Spock would be 49 years under that criteria.

"The Cage" was filmed in 1964. ;)

EDIT: Whoops, the sequel came out in '06, not '10. So shave four years off that one.

There was an episode of Boston Legal that used footage of William Shatner from the original TV movie for The Defender. Does that count? ('57 to '07 -- fifty years later).

Also, didn't Ed Asner recently reprise a role he originated on the original Hawaii 5-0 on the new one? (EDIT: Yeah, 1975 and 2012).

There's also William Russell who played Ian Chesterton on Doctor Who.

Doctor's Who's "The Chase" in 1965 to newly shot footage of The Crusades in 1999. That's 34 years.

Jack Nicholson as Jake Gittes. 16 years between Chinatown (1974) and The Two Jakes (1990).
