[LEFT]I figured since I was geeky enough to compile all this, I might as well throw it out there in the only place I could get away with it, even though I'm sure you're all about tired of seeing people's Trek ratings. :shifty:

I know it's pretty straightforward, but eventually I'd like to spice it up a bit with some episode comments and the like. Also, sorry no TOS. It's my intention to add that sooner than later. I just need to revisit and score that series.

Thanks for taking a look. Feel free to comment, even if it's just to tell me that I'm out of my mind. I know a lot of my likes and dislikes in Trek can be a bit unconventional, if there even is such a thing.

Note: Sorry, but I'm not the best with computers. All my numbers in the left column turned to dots when I pasted it in. So far, I have no clue how to fix that. I guess since the episodes listed for each season are just in order of airing, it really doesn't matter (edit: fixed it as best as I could where it mattered).

Very..... Interesting scores, although I didn't see too many below four don't think I saw many 1s. If any:shrug:. I'd say your being a bit Generous. Other than that fairly accurate rankings :). Course I disagree with some of them.... :shifty:.

Damn. That's a lot of episodes.

I didn't think "Emergence" was bad.

No there are not a lot of episodes below 4, considering the sheer number of episodes. I think you are also correct in that I am pretty generous with my scoring, but that is because I guess I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to Trek. I can usually find some good elements in almost every episode, and overall there are few episodes that I really think are just all around "bad". I tend to look at the lesser episodes of Trek as still being better than 90% of anything else on television, and I'm almost always entertained to a certain degree. ;)

My experience is that many people would agree with you. I just found it unbearable for whatever reason. I like Braga (I'm pretty sure Emergence was a Braga story, but actually written by someone else) because he really pushes the envelope. Sometimes it works (All Good Things..., The 37's), and sometimes it doesn't (Threshold, Fury). I just thought Emergence was ill conceived and ill executed. As always, to each his own.

I really didn't take on this project to eventually post on the internet. I just couldn't decide which series was my favorite, as it always seemed that it was whichever one I was currently watching. I decided to settle it once and for all. My prediction of the finishing order was:

    1. TNG
    2. DS9
    3. VOY
    4. ENT

Enterprise actually wasn't even in the picture when I started it. I had not had any interest in it at all from what I had seen of it. Needless to say I was quite shocked at the final outcome of things, especially with ENT finishing first and TNG finishing last.

Anyway, thanks for taking a look and for the comments guys. I appreciate it. :)

Interesting. My top five seasons would be the same as yours, but in a different order. My bottom five would be quite different with only the first two seasons of TNG being common. Though I really like Enterprise I am much more critical of some episodes you gave high marks to. Chosen Realm, Hatchery and Daedalus would have an average of 2 in my rankings. You gave them an average of 8.76. Episodes like that is why I give the edge to DS9.

Well it's cool that your top 5 would be similar. I tend to have less than popular opinions, about everything. :techman:

I can understand anyone being critical of Chosen Realm. The whole religious fanatics thing is a bit in-your-face. I guess I mostly enjoyed seeing them get what was coming to them, and it was fairly intense. In Hatchery I enjoyed seeing Archer tripping out. Daedalus is definitely out there, but I'm one of those that likes wacky transporter episodes. I can certainly get why you wouldn't like any of those though.

^^^ I like seeing rankings that include everything like that. You even got TAS in there. Eventually I'll include TOS, but I don't see TAS happening (your rating just further adds to that).

We're not terribly far off on a good deal of it. :bolian: We both obviously hold DS9 in very high regard. Neither of us were super impressed as to how TNG, DS9, and Voyager came out of the gate, but I guess that's not surprising, as most shows get better as they develop.

I tried to revisit TOS a couple of years ago, but I could not get through the first disc. I'm going to do it for sure by the end of this year, and with a good attitude going in. I have high hopes.

Thank you. I am glad you like my list.

As for TAS: well, I was thinking about watching The Animated Series again. I gave it a low rating because I hardly even remember any of them. And the ones that I do remember are not all that stellar. After all it is a 1970s cartoon we are talking about. Unless someone is into classic cartoons, I really don't see the series being all that appealing to the average viewer. However, because I like Trek a lot. I am willing to dive back into my DVD set and give it another fresh perspective, though.

As for the Original Series: I highly recommend that you make sure you are watching the Remastered Versions of the show. The revamped special effects alone makes it worth it. However, I know how you feel, though. I had a hard time getting past the cheesy sets when I first watched TOS. However, give it time and you will get used to it. Also, if you think it will help, visualize Star Trek 11's cool effects and sets over the cheesy ones when you watch it, too. Either that or imagine TOS as some kind of futuristic version of the 1960s, that later gets altered by some type of time travel incident or something.

Anyways, what I am trying to really say is that if you stick with TOS, the show will really surprise you. In fact, it could even be one of your all time favorite Trek series (like it is for me now).

Yeah, the only series that stayed consistent as far as quality for me was the Original Series. I thought all the seasons were great after repeat viewings and reflection. However, I know what you mean about later Trek, though. It seemed like most of the series didn't improve until later on.

Well, now I'm thinking that perhaps once I get through TOS, if that goes well, I'll at least give TAS a shot. Like you, I love Trek, so in a way it would kind of be a shame to not even give it a chance.

Well the only access I'll have to it is whatever Netflix has. Honestly, I didn't even know it had been remastered with revamped special effects. That's wild. I hope that's what Netflix has.

I haven't seen the entire series since sometime around the early 80's. It was quite a shock to try and watch when I tried most recently, especially after watching the four modern series. I'll try and keep your tricks in mind when I do watch it (I chuckled at the "futuristic version of the 1960's"- that's good). I really do think I'm going to really enjoy it this time around.

Yeah we really are quite close in our Trek tastes as far as seasons go. Cool.

Another thing that surprised me is that going in, I really thought that at least one season of Voyager would make a run at the top spot. Couldn't believe when the dust cleared it didn't even come in until #12. I see your first season is at #10, and we both agree it's season 4 at the top for VOY. :bolian:

  13. Lord Garth

    My season rankings:

    TOS - 1, 2, 3
    TNG - 6, 3, 4, 7, 5, 2, 1
    DS9 - 6, 5, 4, 7, 2, 3, 1
    VOY - 4, 7, 6, 5, 3, 2, 1
    ENT - n/a

It's too late at night for me to group together 24 seasons at once.

Someone's bound to ask me about fifth season TNG, so I'll just say something seemed off that year but the sixth season more than made up for it, especially as it progressed.

VOY is the hardest to rank because the episodes vary so wildly in quality. There's almost no point in ranking those seasons but I'd put the fourth season at the top with the seventh season just underneath it.

Yeah, TAS is definitely not going to be too many people's favorite. But it is interesting to see the different stories in TAS that the live action show might have tackled if it didn't get canceled.

Yeah, that's how I first originally watched the majority of them before I started purchasing them. So to answer your question... yes. Netflix has the Remastered Version of Star Trek. In fact, I do believe it is the only version they have that I am aware of. You can confirm this in the Member Reviews section for each of the TOS DVD Seasons. Also, I think you will enjoy the enhanced special effects. They use CGI for a lot of the exterior shots of the starships, the planets, phaser fire, and strange alien phenomenon. Sometimes they will do CGI shots of a futuristic city in the background on a planet, too. They also cleaned up the picture's color / quality and the sound. They even re-scored the main theme song with a new identical voice artist in order to record it in true 5.1 digital surround sound.

Ha, ha, ha... I am glad that you found my reference to TOS as being futuristic version of the 1960's humorous. Whatever works for you in sticking with it, I know it will be well worth your time, my friend. Oh, and like you: I watched Star Trek: The Original Series in the early 80's, as well. I was a little kid then and had truly fond memories in watching them. However, years later I couldn't get into it after becoming a TNG fan, though. However, as you know, that has all changed now and I have come full circle in loving TOS again.

However, if your still not sure about TOS and you want to start off with a bang with the Original Series, I would watch the following episodes (below) out of the 2nd Season to start....

That's the smart way to do it, unless you have no life and many hours to kill doing it like I did it. You can't condense it down any easier than that! :bolian:

That's a relief, and good info to have. I'll feel better going into it. I really had no idea they did all that.

Well while I was too young to appreciate the original run (I'm 46), I did see the whole series for the first time in the early 70's. I was a kid and actually more interested in Saturday morning fare than Trek, but I still recall liking it.

The last time I saw the show in the early 80's, it came on Sunday nights. Myself and a few friends would get together in a bit of a ritual fashion every week, put a buzz on, and watch Trek. It was great, and we thought it was just about the coolest thing ever. I want to be able to enjoy it again kind of like how I did then (probably minus that old fashioned buzz most of the time though). I want to make that "full circle".

Thank you for the links, but get this, I'm on dial-up! Yep, you read correctly. I still have friends that send me YouTube links all the time, and I can't remind them enough times to make them remember that I can't watch it. It would be impossible for most people these days to deal with a 28.8 bps connection, but I'm pretty used to it.

Anyway, thanks again to all for the comments and the input.

Voyager would be the hardest for me to rank. Nothing stands out about any season. Sort of a "villian of the year" series that all mixes together. All the seasons would group in that narrow band of "didn't love but didn't hate".

I watched the non-remastered versions and never had any problems with them. I don't expect 21st century effects and makeup from a 1960s show, and we're all well used to using the suspense of disbelief, so that's not really the problem. I pay more attention to the stories and characters, writing and acting. I was quite impressed with most of season 1, despite a few clunkers here and there, but the problems I had with the show were never the effects - it was the occasional sexism, and some things that weren't that prominent or noticeable in season 1, but got more and more jarring as the show went on: the reliance on cliches, especially the scenes where everyone laughs at the bridge at the end of the episode that got overused and old after a while, lighthearted moments that felt incongruous after redshirts deaths or destruction of entire planets... The main characters were great but stagnant, and maybe it was a blessing in disguise that the show was cancelled, and Trek could continue in the movies where the characters could get some development.

I'm not sure if Mirror, Mirror is to best way to get acquainted with the show, it makes for better viewing after we've already know the normal versions of characters well. I would recommend a few other episodes before you come to Mirror, Mirror - a few from season 1 could work well , too (the order is not important):
Where No Man Has Gone Before
    Balance of Terror
The Cage/The Menagerie (choose which you'll watch - I think that The Cage is better, and I watched it first and really loved it, but it is the aborted pilot and doesn't feature any of the regular characters of TOS except for Spock, who is very different at this point; The Menagerie is good in its own right and manages to incorporate The Cage in it, though the framing story is a bit too far-fetched)
The Naked Time (best viewed after you've seen a few other episodes and gotten to know the characters somewhat, as it shows them acting 'abnormally' and revealing their hidden sides)
The Enemy Within (great episode, apart from a horribly sexist line at the end)
City on the Edge of Forever
    The Galileo Seven
    Devil in the Dark
This Side of Paradise (watch it after you've gotten acquainted with the characters, as they're again not quite being themselves)
    Space Seed
    Errand Of Mercy

From season 2, apart from The Doomsday Machine, The Trouble with Tribbles and Mirror Mirror, you also have to see Amok Time and Journey to Babel.

Season 3 has quite a few lame episodes, but also a few excellent ones, like The Tholian Web, Is There In Truth No Beauty?, The Enterprise Incident, Day of the Dove...

If I did the season rankings I have the right to do, of the ones I've seen in their entirety, (or just majority of episodes, because otherwise its just ranking DS9 and early Voyager), it comes out like this:

    1. DS9 Season 5 (Nor the Battle to the Strong:adore:)
    2. DS9 Season 6
    3. DS9 Season 3
    4. DS9 Season 7
    5. TNG Season 5
    6. DS9 Season 4
    7. VOY Season 5
    8. VOY Season 4
    9. DS9 Season 2
    10. VOY Season 1
    11. DS9 Season 1
    12. VOY Season 2
    .
    .
    .
    100. TNG Season 1

Your list may inspire me to get off my backside and watch Enterprise, or it may not.

I recommended TOS's "Doomsday Machine", "Mirror Mirror", and "Trouble with Tribbles" as a starting point because I know he is a guy who more than likely enjoys guy like things like hot girls in mini skirts, explosions, cool special effects, and the like. Of course I don't want to speak for you Joeman.

However, I just know that if I went back in time and wanted to convince myself that TOS was awesome. I would show myself these Remastered episodes to start.

Now, if I knew my past self was committed to watching the entire series no matter what: Then I would have myself watch it chronologically like this then...

    Side Note:

~Of course TAS (The Animated series) can be skipped over if it is hard to get into it. Also, the Animated episodes are listed by stardate and not by airdate. So you will have to watch it according to this list and not the way that it presented within the DVD Complete Set.

    Side Note 2:

    * In addition, I recommend watching the Remastered Version of the original unaired pilot episode titled "The Cage" instead of the extended version. The extended episode of "The Cage" has black and white shots (or footage) mixed with color shots. it is a bit uneven or unnatural to watch the episode that way for the first time. Also, one will have to rent or buy the 3rd Season of the Remastered TOS in order to view "The Cage" first, too (Original Series Season 3 Disc 7).

    The only show I feel confident in ranking by season is DS9. Mine goes: 5, 3, 7, 6, 4, 2, 1
