Am downloading it now, and have never played before

Any advice for a player just about to start out?

Take your time, don't rush the leveling process, it's short enough as it is.
Read all the tooltips for gear and abilities to get an idea on what they do and how they might interact and synergize.
Don't spend any resources on gear while leveling, you won't need the stuff for long and get good enough gear from drops.
Try to have fun and don't let yourself be put into the endless grind treadmill too much. ;)

Join the Trekbbs fleet and don't be afraid to ask questions. We have all been there.

And don't be afraid to ask someone to dumb down their explanation. When you play for a while things are referred to by acronym, and the game develops a language of its own which we sometimes forget not everyone speaks.

Well I've given up on being able to play

Last night It downloaded 10+gb for "patching" only to finish and tell me it needed to patch another 700mb or so

Well this morning it downloaded another 6gb and told me it was only 5% done

I have an 80gb monthly cap so I can't be doing this forever, the installer is very shoddy and nowhere on the site can I find an answer as to how big the download actually is

Poor form star trek online, poor form

The installation and patching is notoriously slow... patience my friend.

I have tried again and the same problem happens, the launcher just keeps on downloading gbs of data, yet the "patched" amount is stuck on 5%

I wish i could just leave it on all day but if it's not actually downloading anthing then it's wasting my data cap

    How are you downloading?

Did you get a retail copy somewhere or are you directly downloading from PWE? In that case you are probably using the ARC launcher?

    Have you tried Steam?
I would recommend Steam if you don't have a retail disc...

If you are willing to take a bit of leap of faith that you will like the game, I would recommend the Steam Starter Pack, because it will give you a month gold status (Edit: actually not sure about the gold status, it's not mentioned in teh description, but usually once you pay for a game copy that is included), which in itself has some perks for any character you level during that time.

    It also contains these items:

    • One XP Boost that will provide a single character with a 20 percent increase in the amount of Skill Points earned up to a maximum of 1,000 Skill Points.
    • Steam Powered Title
    • Mk II Phaser Assault Minigun [CrtH][Dmg]
    • Mk II Personal Shield [Cap]
    • Mk II Energy Dampening Armor [RegHP]
    • Mk II Quantum Torpedo Launcher [Acc][Dmg]
    • Mk II Resilient Shield Array [Cap]
    • Trill Male Engineering Bridge Officer Candidate (Uncommon Quality) equipped with a Mk II Phaser Blast Assault [Dmg], Mk II Personal Shield [Cap] and Mk II Energy Dampening Armor [Dis]
    • Vulcan Female Science Bridge Officer Candidate (Uncommon Quality) equipped with a Mk II Phaser Assault Split Beam [CrtH], Mk II Personal Shield [Cap] and Mk II Energy Dampening Armor [Dis]
    • Blockade Runner Escort: Steamrunner Class
    • Blockade Runner Escort Retrofit: Steamrunner Class
Which is an excellent starter package and well worth the money, since it also contains an endgame version of the Steamrunner class, one of the best escort class starship in the game.

The Steam Starter pack costs 22,50€ (in Germany), notsure what the rate is where you are, though.

I will try the steam version now, yes I was trying Arc before

Arc was dreadful, I have never seen such a poor install "service" before, so hopefully Steam will work

    Oh..............................Boy

Ok, so I downloaded the steam version, (another 6gb) and you want to guess what happened?

PATCHING, OH YEAH WE ARE PATCHING AGAIN, ANOTHER 6gb needed.

    Nope, forget this

that's used almost half of my monthly 80gb limit so far, 37gb in 2 days, and there are NO guarentees that this 6gb download will actually allow me to play the game.

DREADFUL service being provided here, I mean this is rank amateur sort of stuff

I MAY try again next month if i feel like wasting a dvd worth of bandwith again, but no guarentees.

Not to be funny either but i'm the sort of person who would have spent money on this game, but if this is the effort required to just install the game they can forget it, i'll go and play something else instead

    ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Physical media... I still stand by it, nothing else beats it.
Sounds like a monster install. I was considering trying this game when things get slow in the winter but by the sounds of it... yikes. Unless I had an unlimited cap... still, I enjoy some of the gameplay videos I've seen.
I hope to someday put some of your tips to use, Timelord_Victorius.

Thanks, but still , not me putting up gameplay Videos. There is another guy named Timelord who does that.
Never been able to find his Videos, though.

STO, CO and Neverwinter are actually some of the "smaller" MMO's you can download. Unfortunately all MMO's require gigabytes to download if you haven't already been playing from the outset and keeping up to date.

It's not so much the file size as it is the lack of knowing how much, even roughly that you need to download, sadly in new Zealand we still have data caps in place, we get 80gb at my flat, if I could guarantee 40gb would be enough, I'd be fine with that.

As I say though, there's no guarantee

You have the basic install from steam, patching it up now should be it.

at this point it doesn't matter. he just needs to patch the game files he already has.
There won't be a second or third patch directly necessary.
The next time he needs to patch, it will be when the game regularly updates, and that patch will be significantly smaller.

    1) Quite a bit of beginner advice is in the regular STO forum. You just have to read through it. Don't be afraid to ask members of the TrekBBS Armada for advice.

    2) If you need an original install disc of the game, let me know. I have several (if I can find them in the moving boxes...)

    3) I have the Amazon Collector's Edition and the Steam? Deluxe Digital Download which give bonuses that are useful/fun to starting players.

    4) I'm still off the Internet at home. They installed it yesterday but nothing's working. (Ensuring that something is operational is obviously not part of their contract. I can call tech support but it cost 0.43 Euros per minute. The last time I called tech support I was on hold for 20 minutes.)

If and when they get my line operational, feel free to give me a shout. I enjoy doing the lower level missions.

    Thanks

I bought 3 Collector Editions when they were $6-7 on Amazon. I gave away the last code for that recently. I probably still have codes for the basic game which I bought for 2 Euros a piece at a Woolworths in Germany.
