Enterprise coming out of the water will look just as cool as Space Battleship Yamato

But if your spacecraft (whether it's in space or underwater) doesn't have screen doors, how would you keep the flies out? :vulcan:

As long as you keep the flies out of the transporter room, you should be okay. Mixing flies and teleportation can get messy . . . .

So really, it's only the transporter room that needs a screen door.

No need for screen doors, just put a few of these around the room.

It really is quite freaky whenever a bug flies into one of those.

Nah, for it to be a problem in a fictional spacecraft it would have to be part of the plot.

The director has taken the thumbnail description "Star Trek is like Horatio Hornblower, but in outer space" a bit too literally. ;)

Star Trek fans sucking the life out of the franchise since 1987. This thread is just ridiculous. The ship can go WARP SPEED. Something that doesn't exist, and people are getting all anal about the ship underwater. Star Trek's problem is fans just can't have fun anymore. Star Wars fans may hate the ewoks and jar jar binks, but they haven't sucked the fun out of the franchise like Star Trek fans do.

Since 1979, at least. I've read old Best of Trek books where fans complain about everything from the transporter effect needlessly changing in the first movie to Wrath of Khan being a shallow Star Wars rip off to (most bizarrely) a guy failing a Trek novel because it doesn't follow *his* system for how stardates should work.

The more things change, the more they stay the same!

A few years back I was chatting with a (very pleasant) fan who told me that he couldn't get into the new movie because the insignias were wrong in the Kelvin sequence.

He was a nice guy, but I couldn't help thinking:

"Seriously? A massive Romulan ship is attacking from the future, Kirk's father is valiantly sacrificing his life even as his infant son takes his first breath . . . and you're fretting over the friggin' insignias?"

    Kinda missing the point.

    You don't know?

Gene Roddenberry originally presented the Trek concept as "Wagon Train to the stars". (Wagon Train was a weekly TV series about America's cowboy era, with people moving west as part of a Wagon Train. So many people, so many stories, you never knew who or what might show up next.)

If we could harness this level of obsession and apply it to things that actually exist, we could probably build an actual Enterprise. One that can fly through space and hide underwater if needed.

Remember that part in Galaxy Quest where the kid was asking Tim Allen about tech stuff in an episode and Tim blew up and yelled at the kid and said it was just a TV show?

    That was awesome.

Re: Will there be an explaination for how enterprise can go underwater

It seems that no one can point out even reasonable issues with the new holy of holies. Any attempt to do so will be met with a star ship load of examples of past ludicrous complaints presumably trying to imply they are all on the same level.

It is not unreasonable to question if a star ship can exist underwater. The pressures involved are enormous and there is no reason any form of flying object should normally be designed to cope with them.

Now maybe there is a way for the Enterprise to operate in water but I have no problem with anyone who is not prepared to sacrifice their reason on the alter of the modern obsession with "Cindy Lauper Trek": Fans just want to have fun (AT ANY COST). So can we avoid this silly self-indulgent ridicule (or at least restrict it to things you are sure deserve it)? Such rampant anti-intellectualism really isn't a good look.
