How do we explain Serenity? Did she kill it because it was an extension of the TV show that she killed? Or that she killed it because it was a movie she was in?

(I do have to say, I find her very overrated. Even by the low requirements of Girl In Genre Film.)

Summer Glau doesn't kill shows any more than Ted McGinley did before her. Since most TV shows have short lives, and failed series outnumber successful ones, it's inevitable that plenty of actors appear in multiple failed series, sometimes several in a row. The fact that Summer Glau gets singled out merely shows how memorable a performer she is.

I'm making my way through the John Larroquette Show.

IMDB says Ted's in there eventually.

If McGinley's there for season two, you're probably right.

    But...

If he's a season three actor, where everything went wrong, then you're probably wrong.

    She didn't kill it.

You can't kill a film. Maybe you could kill a film series. But the film is there. I can see the DVD from where I'm sitting. It's a done deal.

A film can run out of money half way through.

And the studio can shelf complete bollocks for years to forever if they feel like it.

You want her to play Emerald Blair if Hollywood options the movie rights to Only Superhuman, don't you? ;)

No, she's the wrong type. If we're thinking in terms of Whedon veterans, it should be more like someone with the looks of Scarlett Johansson and the attitude of Eliza Dushku.

There is a supporting character in the novel who's more Glau's type, but she's Japanese.

Scarlett is a Whedon veteran after only one film? ;)

    I was just kidding.

Still we have a tough time casting our own work. And then once we find our perfect cast, they have this annoying habit of growing old, or dying on us.

    Blasted inconsiderate of them. :vulcan:

I know, but you think I'm gonna pass up a chance to talk about my book? ;)

Particularly since I have such a clear mental image of Emerald Blair that I've built over many years, based on a variety of influences. There's no way there could be a real person who's right in every detail.

But then, I'm the one who's always saying that the whole point of an adaptation is to tell a story in fresh and different way, not to copy it slavishly. If someone did ever make a movie out of my novel, I'd need to keep in mind that it would be their version of the concept and a lot of things would inevitably be changed.

Why do you think I brought it up?

I have much the same problem with Tara Mason in Uncommon Valour. No actress quite fits the description. I can find faces and figures that I'd be happy with but they're all on actresses that are too blasted short! Both Tara (5'9") and Mary Stewart (6') have to be noticably taller than all the other women, who hover between 5'2" and 5'6".

4 episodes in the third season. He was hired mainly because he was married to Gigi Rice who played Carly the Hooker.

But the show was still on the air after he was gone.

Yes, yes, it was the fourth season where everything went wrong.

    My bad.

    Tom Welling as Wonderman?

They could really play off the "I'm the cheesiest actor in the world" routine Simon has going for him.

No, no, I'm going to continue to believe she is a TV show killer. It fits a point of view that I have grown attached to, and I won't let facts get in the way. ;)

Well, it WAS a flop.... and didn't spawn a series... so....

    A failed series...

(I don't mean creatively, but from all other aspects...failed. Just like a lot of shows. I'm saying this because it's not about Anti-Browncoat blah blah blah... but, come on, the show WAS cancelled, the movie failed to meet expectations...)

^Which is what makes it so impressive to me that Marvel was willing to trust Joss Whedon with The Avengers, the keystone of their entire movie universe, even though he only has one less-than-successful feature film to his credit as a director. It shows that they looked past the raw numbers and focused on creativity and substance instead.
