T'Pol: "Are you aware that the Lyssarrian Prime Conclave has banned the creation of simbiots?"

Archer doesn't look at her. His voice is flat.

Archer: "We don't answer to the Lyssarian Prime Conclave."

T'Pol: "Simbiots are living, conscious entities. We'll be growing a sentient being for the sole purpose of harvesting tissue."

Archer: "I'm aware of the ethical implications."

He pauses, clearly troubled by his decision, and turns to face T'Pol.

Archer: "If we weren't in the Expanse, maybe my decision would be different. But we've got to complete this mission. Earth needs Enterprise. Enterprise needs Trip."

He turns away again, trying to bury his unease.

Archer: "It's as simple as that."

But it's clear that this is not a simple matter to him at all.

In sickbay, Phlox removes the Larvae from its container and injects it with Trips DNA.

Enterprise at a stop, with the particles latching on to the hull.

Captains Starlog Supplemental. The engines are still down and the nucleonic particles continue to build up on the hull. It's been two days since Doctor Phlox initiated the procedue to grow the simbiot.

The Lights in sickbay are low as Phlox brings Archer to a tub with an embryo floating inside.

Phlox: (removing wraparound cover) "It's rather sensitive to light at this stage. By tomorrow morning, if all goes well, we'll have a healthy baby boy on our hands."

Fade out on Archer looking at the embryonic child inside.

We return to Sickbay and hear the sound of baby cries. The infant is inside a makeshift cot. The Doctor is bottle feeding while T'Pol & Archer look on.

Phlox: "Perfect genetic duplicate, right down to the birthmark on his right side."

    T'Pol: He certainly sounds healthy.

    Phlox: "And hungry. Excuse me."

He hands T'Pol the bottle, so he can pick up and rock the baby.

    "There, there.

Ooooh, it's been some time since I've had a new-born...

...but I see I haven't lost my touch."

    Archer regards the child uncertainly.

Archer: "Three days ago he was just another one of your creatures...something you kept on a shelf."

    [^^ Gotta love Phlox's positive outlook. :) ]

T'Pol: "In a short time he'll be a lot older. Have you thought of where he's going to live?"

Phlox: Why not right here? I can't think of a more stimulating environment for a developing young mind, and I'd be able to keep a close eye on his development.

Archer: (on his way out of Sickbay) "Sounds like you've found yourself a new roommate."

Followed by T'Pol, he pauses and turns to glance back for a second... listening to his Doctor, perhaps considering the ease with which he's already bonded with the child.

Phlox: Now all I need to do is find him a name. The crew's been offering suggestions but nothing sounds right. Steven, Enrique, Dennis. Dennis? You see my dilemma.

Chief Medical Officer's log. After much deliberation I have finally thought of a name for this newest addition to our crew.

Phlox: It's all right Sim. It's all right.

(Log Continued) Lucky for me Denobulans require little sleep. I'm at a loss as to how human adults endure the REM cycle interruptions that accompany the teething stage. Though I knew what to expect, I can't help but be astonished by Sim's rapid physical development. A side note, I may have stumbled across an effective fertilizer for my Orsic fern.

Phlox and Hoshi are sat on the floor, either side of a young boy listening to him read "The War of the Worlds" from a padd. The kid looks about 7 or 8 years old and has Trip's strong southern accent.

Sim: "Those who have never seen a living Martian can scarcely imagine the strange horror of it's app... app..

    (struggles with a new word)

    ...appearance."

Hoshi: We just showed you this book. How did you know about the martian machines?
