A long time ago I started this project. Last week I remembered it and decided to finish it.

The USS King Charles, Stellarford class, from the old Spaceflight Chronology book.

    Here is my take:

As usual, I've tried to package things up and offer them for download. Carrara 5+ and Poser 4+ versions this time. OBJ in the works.

Well done. Nice work, I like.

Are you working with other ships from the SFC? That books tops my list of just about anything. If you've got other work, or even ideas, about ships in there...lay it on me.

    I checked your website...I like, I like!
Keep up the super work. And post it here, too. Gotta spread the SFC word.

Oh yes - nicely done! I like how you've cleaned up the lines of the original. Excellent work. Looks like a fine ship for cruising about the galaxy in style. :techman:

While the original drawing is a bit rough, I like the width and proportions of the ship. The newer version, while cleaner, is also more rounded and not as nicely proportioned for my liking. The glass forest sections are very well realised.

Thanks, Axeman. :) Part of the issue is deliberate. I made the ship "taller" so I could add lots of windows on the sides like a modern day cruise ship. It just didn't look like a passenger liner to me flat like in the original picture.

Your design changes make more sense than in the original, people would want a window if they were going on a cruise like that. More windows = more customers paying for a cabin with a window. Then again, they have those large glass areas for seeing the stars as well. I still prefer the wide look though, it looks more Star Destroyer than submarine.

Heh. The original color scheme was gray. My first reaction was that it looked like the Red October, especially with that red White Star Line emblem on the side. :) It was only then that I decided to go with the gold paint.

I appreciate your feedback. If this had been a WIP and not just finishing up loose ends, I might have tried the flat look.

I've started a new ship. You can pester me with suggestions on that one. :)

I wanted to weigh in on this, as well, as a lover of the original Space Flight Chronology book and as an avid cruiser. My thoughts when I first viewed this were: 1) I'm so happy to see someone rendering this idea in 3D; and 2) though I somewhat prefer the original rounder design, as a cruise ship aficionado I completely appreciate the alterations you've made and think they make a lot of sense. I also really like the "glass" arboretum and other areas you've added.

All in all, a big :techman:

That is an interesting design. Any sense of how large this ship is supposed to be?

    From the SFC book:

length: 264 meters, beam: 105.6 meters, draught: 96.8 meters
    mass: 34 million kg
    cruising velocity, warp 3.5
(launched 44 years before the Constitution class)

Have you modelled any other ships out of the SPC? It's really nice to see this old material reimaged, "canon" or not.:)

Yes, I've tried the Mann class and the Baton Rouge class. Both are older models and so are more flawed, but they're out there if anyone's interested.
