Nothing with robots or space craft, but there's time travel, teleportation, ghosts, telekinesis, supernatural entities... it's basically a fantasy not a sci-fi.

I would describe "Lost" as a science fiction fantasy drama so yes as Mr. Light described above it does have elements of sci-fi but leans more towards fantasy.

It may not always be obvious, particularly not early on, but in the end it turns out the whole story is sf/f (I won't try to separate the sf aspects from the f - it's pretty mixed up).

Lost is heavily serialised, so an episode seen out of context might well seem very confusing. I'm in the camp that thinks the final episode poisoned the whole series.

The one where they force that dude into the machine and he transfers to an alternate universe.

It's really not the kind of show where you can just watch random episodes. You'd be severely confused trying to do so.

Like others have said, Lost is an all or nothing show. You can't just watch an episode or two here and there. Every single episode is tied to the story arc and must be watched in order.

Also, I'm in the camp that thinks the final episode was just fine, and am really wondering just what the people that so venomously hate it were expecting.

I think they were expecting a more down to earth, based in reality definition of what the show was about. I personally really liked the ending they went with and thought that any sort of actual explanation would have actually been worse than the ending they wrote. One of my favorite SF/F shows, but you can't just jump in and watch an episode.

Then I question whether they were watching the same show that I was.

Not if they're achieved by 'magic' rather than science.

To be fair, it was repeatedly promised, there was a normal science explanation for everything.

I gave up on that, and greatly enjoyed the Finale for the character closure, but, I can understand why people were expecting down to earth answers to be given.

Promised, huh? By who? The writers?

See, this is why I don't pay attention to interviews or spoilers or commentary. It builds up people's expectations, and then when the writers don't fulfill their promises, the audience gets angry.

I never paid attention to anything other than what I saw on screen, so I never knew to expect certain explanations for any of the mysteries on the show.

The Show Runners, Damon and Carlton (And possibly even JJ). They constantly challenged the audience to come up the answers to the shows mysteries. They fueled the rabid theorizing by the fans every step of the way.

Again, let me say, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire run of the series.

    You mean technobabble. ;)

Not really true, Daniel and his mom were spouting it all the time.

When? Nobody ever promised anything about the resolution, except that 1) it wasn't a dream, and 2) they weren't dead all along.
