People only object to a laugh track if there was never an audience there to begin with. "Laugh tracks" that are actual live recordings of an audience viewing the performance are fine, although as the DVD commentary on RD Series 7 mentions, the cast didn't care for the fact the SFX-heavy season was filmed with no audience and later shown to an audience whose laughter was recorded. I think Craig Charles mentions that without an audience it was hard to get joke timing right.

But with an actual filmed-in-front-of-an-audience scenario, even though there's a trade-off with reduced ability to do SFX or really extravagant stories (though I thought RD did quite well regardless), there's still an obvious relationship developed between the actors and the audience. Watch, for example, the smeg ups where we see the cast joking with the audience, playing off them. You don't get the same atmosphere when it's just a camera crew present.

I don't know the background of how Season 9/10 came to be commissioned, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the actors made "live audience" a condition of their involvement.

^Actually Doug Naylor said he wanted the audience, but what he was unsure about is this day and age all the spoilers and pics that would leak on to the internet. In the end they decided it was worth it.

And the audience has to decide if the strip search and full body cavity excavation is worth it.

^Yep, that's the one. But it's Red Dwarf, I'm sure people will consider it to be worth it.

Hopefully it will be a return to form because the last one reminded me of those corny ill-advised tv reunion movies they would do with The Beverly Hillbillies or The Dukes of Hazzard.

I don't think it will be a return to "form", since that would require Rob Grant, they left the truly classic years behind a long time ago.

It might be a return to the quality we saw in s8, that's the best we can hope for.

I never thought series 8 was as bad as most people make out. I thought 7 was the worst of the lot but even then there was a lot I liked.
Back to Earth may have been a low point but still had moments of genius that stood out but never enough to save it really.

Yeah, S8 was OK, just not a patch on the fantastic 1-5, or even the slightly less fantastic S6.

To me 1-5 is when they were "on form", it was both a great comedy and a great sci-fi show, and I don't see it ever coming close to that sort of perfect mix again. They'd better off just making sure they come up with better plots than BtE rather than trying to be as funny as the old stuff. At least we can get some good sci-fi, even if it isn't that funny.

Well it kinda seems to me that Grant brought most of the funny and Naylor brought most of the Sci-fi and that's why it's been off since Grant left.

You might be right, there were still quite a few good concepts through s7 & 8.

I'm personally hoping they return to the core premise of the show, which is 4 or 5 losers stranded alone in space millions of miles away from Earth with nothing to do. No other humans, no prison, no old crew, none of that crap. Just good strong stories about the guys and what they find to fill their otherwise miserable lives.

Yeah, it was always at its best with that, hopefully that's what it'll be again. We live in hope, eh?

I thought S8 was the funniest series, if not the best overall.

    Yeah, I freakin' loved S8.

I just rewatched it a few days ago and it had me in stitches... esp. "Krytie TV"!

I can't wait to see the guys back at it.

Oh wow, they are going to use model shots? That's excellent!

They are using the model that was originally built in 1997 for the Remastered project, which was never actually used on screen (with the awful CG version used instead). The model was intended to be used in the movie: there's some test footage on one of the DVDs.

According to the official site, the model has been altered in size, so will hopefully be closer to the original size of the ship.

With no point of reference (ie: another ship) it was always hard to tell the size.

Just descriptions of the # of decks & whatnot.

The remastered ship was far, far longer than the original.

Red Dwarf: Series 8 (and Series 1 to 3 Remastered)

When Back to Earth came around they modified the above CG model to better resemble the original ship:
