It's occurred to me with the iPhone able to do just about anything you can think of, it would follow that by the 23rd century communicators will be even more capable...able to do everything a tricorder can do and then some.

In fact, since they're redoing Star Trek and upgrading it, let's have communicators with apps, and maybe phaser-capable too!

Just think how being able to text "Bm me up Sctty!" might be useful. Or just a simple thing as GPS navigation for an away team...or shake the communicator to find the best fleshpot on Argelius...

They won't have iPhones in Star Trek because Nokia has beaten Apple to getting product placement

:rommie:  Aren't people accusing iPhones of trying to turn into tricorders?

They did up what the tricorders do, in some respects, by having it be able to record a personal log (Delta Vega scene). I'm sure they'll be able to do more in the future (of the franchise, not literally our future.)

Well who says the nuTrek communicators don't have some other features - not like an iPhone - c'mon man who wants something that'll scratch and damage easily in a military environment? The nuTrek tricorder is kinda cool in that it looks like a smaller version of the classic - but I would think that a dedicated tricorder would have more scanners, sensors, and other stuff that makes it more useful in the field than a smaller pocket sized "iCom-order" would do.

Keep in mind Starfleet IS still the military. Everything needs to be ruggidized and able to take a beating not to mention do what it should do all the time.

I noticed that the medical scanners or tricorders in the new movie looked a LOT like the handheld Vulcan scanners T'Pol carried around on ENTERPRISE. Round readout screen and everything. The altered timeline Starfleet scanner/tricorder looked a tad bigger with a lower handle or control surface but aside from that they were very close in appearance.

They have iphones, it's called the Enterprise. The whole ship is one giant iphone. Microsoft is contracted by Starfleet.

I've been thinking that tricorders really make communicators obsolete myself, especially if they are as small as the ones in the new movie. If tricorders can transmit and receive data signals, they should be able to transmit and receive comm signals too, IMO.

Communicators may have the advantage of being dedicated communication devices with a longer range than tricorders, though...

^^ And probably better support for things like translation, signal scramblings/encryption, and being able to punch through inteference.

Maybe in the future, they realized that a phone should be for making phone calls, and created something more practical for everything else.

I alway's looked at comunicators as walky talkies, thier only function is for comunication. Sure tricorders could have that function too, but they are mainly for scientific data collection. I mean how many civilians do you see with walkie talkies and how many Military personel do you see with iphones, unless it's thier personal phone.
