Well, I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. A few hours ago, my computer got infected with the dreaded FBI Cybercrime virus.

For those not familiar with this scam, what happens is your computer locks up and keeps displaying this:

The page states that your computer is blocked due at least one of the reasons specified: download or distribute copyrighted material, view child pornography, etc. It requires users to pay a "fine" of $300 in the form of a Greendot MoneyPak code in order to unlock the computer. It also tries to scare computer users by saying the fine must be paid within 72 hours, otherwise, a criminal case will be filed.

Honestly, does anyone really think the FBI, or any law enforcement agency for that matter, works this way?

Anyway, I was able to purge the virus from my computer (I think) by doing a system restore. But I'm running a full security scan just to make double sure.

I think the creators of this are not counting on logic, but the pure fear reaction the victims will have upon seeing "FBI Cybercrime Division" and threats of prison time.

Sorry you got hit with it. :( Glad you were able to purge it, though!

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? On occasion, our guardians have been known to do far worse. Such behavior is not systemic, however... (Cue "In Soviet America" jokes.)

I am constantly removing this shit. Friends, family, you name it. "John! The FBI's taken over my computer! What do I do?!"

My sister had it some time last year. She nearly had a nervous breakdown... She was 16 at the time.

In that case, my best advice would be "Hey, just relax, let the program do it's thing. We're all cool here, baby."

What would a J. Allen Cybercrime Virus look like?

(I'd make some suggestions but I can't figure out how to say 'Cybercrime' with pony puns)
