Thanks to everyone who voted for me in the last one. I was thinking of what would make a good topic for a contest, and then it dawned on me. We're all aware of the Wonders of the World, and there have been several campaigns over the years for a new set of modern wonders, and those can be seen on Wikipedia. But what do you think should be listed as a modern wonder? It can either be man-made, or something seen in nature that simply takes your breath away and makes you awestruck. As a twist, I'll even accept things seen in TV and Movies, but restrict it to things that appear in the real world, rather than Sci-Fi and Fantasy in order to keep it grounded in reality. So, in other words, let's have fun making our own list As an example, in 2000, a cave full of giant gypsum crystals was discovered. This cave almost looks like the setting for Superman's Fortress of Solitude. And that's my entry:
This should be interesting...and since I completely missed out on voting the last time, I hope you will link the voting thread to this one; so I don't miss voting here.
this is the largest object in the known universe ... 4 billion light-years across. http://www.theatlantic.com/technolo...ructure-ever-observed-in-the-universe/267161/
my favourite planctic organism: a Pediastrum duplex these pretty algae live in sweetwater ponds, streams, rivers, cisterns, puddles and rain barrels all over the world. You've propably swallowed a few of them last time you were swimming
Done. I've decided to dedicate my New Wonders avatar to the tiniest of things without which the world as we know it would not exist: the humble transistor: The 'slideshow' contains images depicting the symbol for an NPN-transistor, the very first transistor mock-up, the first transistor radio, an integrated circuit, the very first hand-held calculator, the Apollo Program, the first micro-processor, a personal computer, the Internet protocol suite, the LHC, the very first cell-phone, the very first smartphone, the ISS, a tablet, and a flashing internet-map. I hope it's not disqualified for that one media-frame...
Anyone else? I'd like to close this and get the voting started by Monday, Tuesday at the very latest.
you forgot to specify who's tonight. We are from half a dozen timezones from Aussieland to Hawaii. My tonight, for example, is lunchtime in Los Angeles and tomorrow's breakfast in Australia.
