Well, I'll give this a chance as long as Orci & Kurtzman stay the fuck away.

How have I never seen that before?

Anyway, I think JJ Abrams is a solid fit for Star Wars. The franchise incest does bug me a little bit though, I mean c'mon, these are the two big franchises.

After the prequels I didn't expect much out of the upcoming films, so I'm not worried about it. I'll check them out in theaters of course to help avoid spoilers... honestly if it wasn't for the 100% chance of getting spoiled before then I would probably wait for a Blu-ray release. I really don't get why anyone would want to be spoiled. Why would you deny a piece of fiction the chance to surprise you? Is that scary or something?

If I were in control of Star Wars, personally I'd let Seth MacFarlane and Ronald D. Moore both make a pitch and go with whichever one I liked more. But hey, that's just me :)

Trek was pretty dead, and while I don't love everything about it, the reboot really breathed new life into it. It could have gone so horribly wrong in so many ways, and it didn't.

And you both - as well as others in here - need to pull back on the reins of your fannish devotions and/or criticisms. Each camp - whether it be Star Wars, classic Trek, or Abrams Trek - has it own sources of shame regarding the way they interact with other devotees. Accept it and let's move on.

Maybe Wars fans as well as Trek fans who dislike each other will finally their wish - an all out battle between the Federation and the Empire where no doubt the Empire will crush the federation with its death star. ;)

You have got your analogies crossed.

    Abrams is the sex worker.
Star Trek and Star Wars are the customers.

    business decisions - Lucasfilm/Disney

J.J. Abrams has worked with Paramount Pictures for 3 major films : MI3 & STXI, STXII.
He has worked with ILM for STXI & STXII.

ILM has done all the VFX on of the Star Wars films.
After STXI Abrams knows what it takes to do CGI world building.
J.J. Abrams can craft good films and bring in the box office $.
That is the reason Disney want him and the reason they hired him.
It being Disney the next Star Wars film will most definitely be shot in stereoscopic 3-D whether J.J. Abrams likes it or not. I'm sure it comes from the top executives. I bet it will also be 8k digital capture (using a Sony F-65 or similar) rather than 35mm film cameras. The post production pipeline may be 6k instead of 8k resolution but Disney knows how much money the SW franchise is and needs to use these specs for releases in decades to come. We are talking 2014 post production on a state-of-the-art Star Wars new movie.
Dolby Atmos 12.2 audio mix too...

I think the 2015 release will have it showing in 3-D 4k 24fps at the cinemas with 2:35:1 framing .
I don't think we are doing to see them shooting 48fps for Star Wars.

HFR has been almost unanimously trashed by critics... In fact, Half in the Bag spent like half of its The Hobbit review shitting all over 48 fps, and we know how these guys feel about Star Wars. If Disney decided to do Episode VII in HFR, we'd never hear the end of it.

Nah, I don't see it happening either.

If it's true, at least he's more likely than some to get the book continuity involved somehow. He likes doing those "fans-only" things.

To get a Wars film out in 1.5 years on Abrams sometimes slow timetables with films seems rushed, at least to me.

Abrams can probably direct the movie in time. What usually slows him down is that his minions (Orci and the gang) take forever writing a script. May 2009 they said they'd have a Trek sequel script done by the end of the month. They kept saying that until they finally did get it done sometime near the end of 2011. Assuming Michael Arndt can keep his promise of when the script will be done, there's no logical reason why Abrams can't have the film in theatres in 2015.

Disney has already decided when the film will be released. Abrams is being offered the job of directing it with that understanding.

There is, as yet, no reason to think this is going to diminish his control over Star Trek at all.

Star Wars is a real no brainer for him. He's a big fan, its the biggest franchise, and he'd have to try really hard to not improve on the prequels...

He cared enough to get George Kirk's name right. How many people would even know that?
