Dune pronunciation question

Is Leto a girls name? I didn't even know it was a name until I read Dune. Of course names change gender all the time. Bambi was the name of male character in a movie but is used as female name. Masculine named like "Hunter" and "Taylor" are now common for women.

 

I believe Leto was the Greek goddess of being unseen, and was the mother of Apollo and Artemis. As the Atreides were supposedly descended from the house of Atreus, I would have thought they would have known that. Maybe Paulus Atreides was a Johnny Cash fan.

 

But how much of that was actually passed down over the millenea? Does the Orange Catholic Bible have a section on polytheism?
