Next Movie Should Show More Extended Shots Of The Enterprise

One thing about J.J. is that he doesn't show longer beauty shots of the Enterprise. We get just a few seconds of glimpses of the ship and not the whole ship in it's entirety. Why is that? For instance, in STID when the ship was released from the docking clamps, we get maybe 4 seconds of the entire ship positioning itself for warp. Another scene that was entirely within 5 seconds was the shot of the ship when the ship dropped out of warp unexpectedly. That's just two short of time in my opinion. They should have showed the ship much longer coming to a stop. And at several angles. In the Wrath of Khan we got many long extended shots of the ship moving gracefully. I hope they give us longer shots of the entire ship on impulse in the next movie. Anyone agree?

What, this isn't enough for you?

There's plenty of good stuff in there. Honestly a lot of the shots seem comparable to the stock footage in TOS in terms of length. Just long enough to establish the point and move along.

Thanks for that. The video proves I was wrong in my estimation of the ship positioning it self for warp. It wasn't 5 seconds. It was 2 seconds. To short a shot of the ship.

I love the dockyard scene in STID. That was the way the first reveal of the Enterprise should have been handled in ST.

No, really I don't. A bit of starship porn isn't necessarily a bad thing, but those long, long, long beauty-shot sequences in TMP and TWoK were over-indulgent back then. I think what Abrams & Co. have done with exterior shots of the Enterprise and other ships is just fine.

Starship porn is great, I love it. Don't make it the center of your movie, it's about the characters, not the ship.

Please feel free to correct me but the slower you go the closer the shot the more fake it looks - I mean in CGI.

Isn't that why they go so fast?

With a model it doesn't make that much difference but they don't use models any more do they.

This is one of those things that has no right or wrong answer. A glorious long breathtaking beauty shot is awe inspiring to some, and is also a bored as hell yawning get me out of here moment to others.

Personally I love the almost love making style beauty shots of the Enterprise in TMP, however I understand why others think it's self indulgent, overlong and boring. Personally I would have loved to have ST09 or STID to have included a similar style of "Slow Burning Starship Porn." I could look at those ample nacelles all day.....

No, not really. Used to be like that, for example season 3 of Voyager when they started using CGI a lot more. The quality was noticably lower then in later seasons. But with the quality of CGI these days, you can get very close without losing quality.

Long, steady beauty shots of the Enterprise would have been at odds with Abrams' frentic shooting style. They would have caused a disconnect, kinda like the new effects in TOS-R do.

I liked how it was shot in XI, not as a majestic vessel but as a huge thing. So big it didn't fit in frame, you had to be a long way away to get a good look and when you do you don't get the good angles.

Into Darkness kept a similar style, but used much more flattering and zoomed-out angles - in fact, many of them are the same angles Tobias Richter used in his collection of wallpapers from 2009.

That was the case in the BSG TV series, but a big budget movie has a lot more time to work on each shot, and more raw processing power to render them. Take a look at the zoom-in from deep space all the way into the bridge window in Into Darkness - it looked super realistic to me.

If we get too long a look at it we'll see how ugly it really is. ;) Actually I agree with King Daniel.

I think the longest view of it, and my favorite shot of all is when we're looking at it from behind with the Vengeance in the background; the lighted nacelle end caps seem to be narrowing pupils telegraphing a message which mirrors the emotion of the moment: Oh, Shit!

Maybe not "slow burning," but there was something approaching it in the 2009 movie's shot of Enterprise slowly banking away from spacedock, preparatory to heading off toward Vulcan (thought I had a gif of this, but the vid should do to illustrate.) Beautiful bit of footage, I thought.

Personally, I prefer the spacedock reveal and departure from STID. Feels like a proper introduction to the Enterprise.

I like a lot of starship sequences and I think you have the best of both worlds in these new movies. You get new ships and glimpses of new takes on familiar concepts as well as the fast paced action that audiences need to stay interested. I agree that the TMP beauty sequence and even the shortened rehash in TWOK wouldn't have fit with the timing in XI and XII.

My thoughts as well. I don't want another snooze fest like we got with the Motion Picture. The shots have been more than enough time to see what the ship looks like. Anything beyond that is too much. I don't need to be beaten over the head by long shots to realize how nice or "big" the ships are.

I love the current shots, they actually make the Enterprise feel like a real object. Plus they fit the pace of the movie and some are quite beautiful.

If you cut out the spaceship porn and reactions shots of the spaceship porn from TMP it is only 20 minutes long.
