Today one of my friends mistook an article that appeared in the Daily Currant for the real thing. I explained that it is a online satire blog similar to The Onion (but not as funny) and now another friend has asked me for the names of other satire/parody sites which regularly fool people. I have mentioned the Landover Baptist Church but my mind has gone blank on the others. Could you guys provide me the names of the better known ones and maybe some details of some of their better stories.

I can't tell you their better stories (maybe someone else has a few) but The Daily Mash is a British satire site.

The Mash is great. It's the Onion with an extra dose of british bitterness and cynicism. It's also quite even handed, as in they're pretty scathing towards tories and the Mail, but will also take the piss out of guardian readers sometimes.

Newsthump is my first choice - its current headline is :

Future of the Mail Online in doubt following calls to ban ‘hate’ websites.

My old Avatar with Daniel Craig and a massive tash was from there.

I rather like Cracked.com, it's not a satire site, but is humourous.

    www.uncyclopedia.com is pretty funny.

Looks like wikipedia, but all the stories are quite ridiculous.

The Register sometimes approaches Onionesque levels of inspired silliness, and yet its stories are based on actual news items:

The Lapine -- Onionish, from Canada. There's a Christian satire site that I'll come back and add if I ever remember the name of it.

Onion-ish, but maybe more subtle. I just discovered The Lapine recently and it took longer for the "Hey, wait a minute" reflex to kick in than with the average Onion story.

Landover Baptist? Or ChristWire? (Getting a 403 error right now, but perhaps that's temporary.)

I think ChristWire is the one I was thinking of. And, yes, The Lapine is a bit subtle at times. To me, that's a good thing.
