It was better than some of the other Christmas specials but still sort of... meh.

Ha! I do feel like they keep covering up the classic theme each time they tweak it. Season 1 really was about as close to the more stripped down Original theme as they got... remember i think it was McCoy's that almost felt like the musicians thought We need to make the opening sequence sound and look more like TNG

That would have been an interesting trick, considering Time and the Rani Part 1 aired three weeks before Encounter at Farpoint did.

Well... lol hey we ARE talking about a Time Lord after all ;)

I guess it WAS all part of that "It's the 80s! It's all about synthesizers and swooshy graphics and like neon and fanfare!"

The McCoy era is my favourite but that title sequence always looked like something out of a game show to me.

EXACTLY! I was trying to figure out what it reminded me of - exactly like a period game show.

    "C'mon right timeline no whammies!"

"If you guess right you get... A NEW TARDIS!"

I think it's pretty awesome. And it has the second part of the theme that I really like.

I love the theme too but the titles have dated somewhat in a way that the previous title sequences haven't.

Well, as much as I love classic Who, it looks pretty dated in its entirety today, to be honest.

I'd say 2006 Tennant Who has dated far worse than 1963 Hartnell Who.

It's a garish mess on a visual level and the constant pop culture references stand out as very dated. Shane Ward!? Nobody even knows who he is any more.

Yeah, the SFX looked cheap, still does but that's worse in the classic show. As for references to contemporary life, you have them in the old show as well. The fact that it's rooted in its present day is one of the things I've always liked about the show. And I get a kick out of seeing London in the swinging sixties every time that happens. It's the thing that got me through the otherwise mediocre The War Machines and it's part of the reason I like The Invasion so much.

I'm not on about the effects. I'm on about the production design, direction, cinematography et al. The Sontaran 2-parter in S4 is a total assault on the eyes. So much purple :(.

I'm fairly certain that contemporary audiences don't think that purple dates Doctor Who quite as much as black and white.
