Can anyone point me to any image(s) of the TOS-era uniform insignia for USS Yorktown? Google is doing nothing for me on this. Thanks in advance for any assistance!
This is all that I could find after a brief Google search... http://stexpanded.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Images_(Trigwell) None of this is cannnnnon, of course.
I don't think there is a canon for this. In TOS, the USS Yorktown was mentioned in a couple of episodes, but I don't believe the ship or any of its crew were ever actually shown...
I'm fairly certain that comes from Shane Johnson's Uniform Recognition Manual from around twenty years ago.
There's nothing "canon" ever indicating that those badges are tied to ship identity. For all we know, the badges indicate fleet or wing identity, or something else entirely. Nothing on-screen is ever stated that explicitly ties those badges to any specific meaning.
The producers' intent has been stated on several occasions, that every ship had its own insignia design, with ground personnel having that starburst pin (yes, it was a pin, not a patch). And on more than one occasion, they delivered on that intent, most notably "The Omega Glory," "The Doomsday Machine," "Charlie X," and every time we saw a Starfleet admiral or commodore with the aforementioned pin. That they messed up on occasion and showed folks with the Enterprise insignia who weren't part of the Enterprise crew is just part of the realities of producing a very expensive and time consuming television show where time and money are never enough and sometimes you either can't afford to do a special patch this week or your continuity girl screwed up and missed that detail.
I prefer to think that Kirk's delta-shield is some fleet- or wing-unit insignia, rather than for a specific ship. Like the Enterprise is part of the "First Fleet", headquartered at Starbase 11. But to each his own; that's just my fantasy.
The outpost insignia is not a fish, it's half of a broach pin painted white. One of the guys over at the 1701st was able to geet a good pic of the original...
