It better be a USSR flag, or I'm boycotting the movie. :klingon:

It would be funny if they show that they still use Pound instead of Fed Credits, and that Britain isn't part of the Federation at all.

He did play Henry V at Stratford (Ontario). So there's no reason why this could not be so. :techman:

Why wouldn't Britain still exist? The land is still there and people live there. Once the Federation comes into being, it isn't like they renamed everything. The United States isn't Land Zone Gamma, it's the United States. Kirk says that he's from Iowa, showing that the individual states still exist and McCoy talked about Georgia a few times. If they still exist in some form, then other countries would as well. The Earth government probably has standard laws for the whole planet, but the individual countries probably work similarly to the EU or how the states in United States work. Basically each runs itself in a limited fashion with certain aspects left to the Earth government. They probably keep the flags as a symbolic or historic thing.

I'd think Scotland would be far more likely to be the hold out than England. ;)

Similarly here in the United States, Texas would be the last to join any "world government.'

I was hoping they still had commercials in the 22nd century on programming and he could appear as the Priceline guy. :)

I always figured the existing world governments still exist in Star Trek, they just operate on a level more like States. The UFP essentially is a bit like the EU parliament: all the countries in the union have got representatives there, but that doesn't mean they don't also have their own self governing powers as well. The UK is still the UK, the USA is still the USA, and so on. It's just that the boundries have changed.

Alternatively: it's an altered universe in the new movies. No reason to assume that the old school boundries haven't reasserted themselves following Nero's intervention. ;)

Maybe I am reading these posts wrong, but I think some people are confusing one thing for another.

United Earth - the uniglobal government of Earth, finalized 2150
United Federation of Planets - a major galactic power of the Alpha Quadrant

Though the flags are interesting, I am more interested in what is in the sky. Is that a 23rd century air ship above the building?

And Chekov was a proud Russian. Scotty was, well, Scottish. And Kirk recited a mean "We, the People" . . . .

I always found it odder that nearly every single other planet was one government, one society and even one dress code.
