Cursed: That was a rollicking adventure mystery, I had no idea how it was going to unfold. I'm going to enjoy this new Goa'uld on the loose, she's great to look at and more interesting as a Goa'uld than she was as an ex-gf of Daniel.

Speaking of looks, Carter's hair is at the shortest I've seen it now and I wish she'd grow it out a bit. It's.. not that great. I wish it was cute but I'm just not seeing it that way.

And something amazing happened. Janet Frasier appeared in civvies and I realized how buttoned up she'd been until now. Unfortunately she was in a dusty old pyramid so the light wasn't always the best but I think we can agree that this is a look we'd like to see more of..

And O'Neill was NOT pulled away from his fishing! I'm happy for him.

The Serpent's Venom: Teal'c has a very bad visit to Chulac. Lots of shit goes down and Apophis triumphs. Carter solves something with math.

Also, Apophis's face is now less Anakin like, too bad I liked that melted effect.

I loved Amanda Tapping's blonde Victorian hair in an episode of Sanctuary where they did a flashback to Jack the Ripper.

In Stargate they conformed to Air Force regulation haircuts at least most of the time, if not all of it. Female hairstyles are on page 21 of AFI36-2903.pdf.

Apparently she is a natural blonde and dyed her hair dark for Sanctuary.

She looks pretty much PERFECT all the time

You're not missing much, just some 1940's looking illustrations of hair length, but here's the text:

    ***

3.1.3. Hair-Female. Minimum length is one inch, unless approved by the commander upon recommendation from a military treatment facility for medical reasons, to a maximum bulk of three inches from scalp. Hair will end above the bottom edge of collar and any side of an invisible line drawn parallel to the ground. When in doubt, assess correct length of hair with Airman standing in the position of attention. Except in the physical training uniform hair lengths that would be below the bottom edge of the collar will be pinned-up with no loose ends. Bangs will not ouch either eyebrow, to include an invisible line drawn across eyebrows and parallel to the ground. If worn, hairpins, combs, headbands, elastic bands and barrettes must match the hair color (i.e., blonde, brunette, natural red, black, grey), but hair must still comply with bulk and appearance standards. Ornaments are not authorized (i.e., ribbons, beads, jeweled pins). Scrunches are not authorized. Exception: While wearing the PTU, long hair will be secured but may have loose ends and may extend below the collar; i.e. ponytails.

The intent is for pinned-up hair to be styled in a manner that prevents loose ends from extending upward on the head. For example, when using a clip or hairpins, hair will not present the appearance of a ―rooster tail‖; when hair is in a bun, all loose ends must be tucked in and secured; when hair is in a pony tail, it must be pulled all the way through the elastic band and may hang naturally downward and not extending below the bottom of the collar (except while in the PTU). As with all hairstyles, a neat and professional image is essential.

    ****

Then it gets into braids, dreadlocks, frosting, etc., and finally proceed to standards for nail polish and tattoos - including tattoo removal, which possibly involves some sort of Air Force laser platform.

Are you telling me that the boofy, messy, girlish and at times tender hairstyles that Carter has been sporting for Seasons 1 to a bit of 4 are OVER? That would be a very bad thing.

Chain Reaction: Maybourne was so much fun in this episode. He's a nasty little man but clever. His appearance belies his scheming ways. I was cracking up at him in his buttoned up striped shirt and windbreaker standing around gormlessly behind Jack. You can almost hear the mouth breathing.

And now I will ask a question: why can Jack pull in favours from the President? If the answer to this question involves something NOT YET SEEN in Stargate please don't tell me what it is. "You'll find out" will suffice. I may well have forgotten some factlet from a past episode though.

So far as I know, the only connection Jack has to the President is that he keeps saving the planet, and Presidents tend to look favorably on that.

In the rest of the series, Carter's hair doesn't change any more than it already has, except for another altered-reality episode, similar to Carter from the parallel universe who was married to O'Neill.

I liked her hair changing for 3 Seasons! It was lovely. I can't believe they are leaving her in my least favorite hair for the rest of the show. The Doctor has longer hair, other women have longer hair :scream:

They have cut her beauty in half.

No, I'm not saying that!

Her hair keeps changing, it's just that everything you've seen so far is also in conformance with regulations (except for the somewhat disheveled styles, which might be an artifact of gate travel).

Oh, and the military sometimes throws their grooming requirements out the window, such as in Afghanistan where a beard was required in certain branches so the natives wouldn't freak out, and the bushier the better, within reason.

I wish SG-1 showed more of her full-on smile. Often she grins on the show, but if you've seen her turn on a big beaming smile (like she often does in the director's specials and such), well, she goes all Christie Brinkley super-model radiant. Perhaps they decided that would detract from the serious nature of her character, though.

2010: I've always loved AU eps, something I don't consider Trek's MU to have done to the same extent or very well at all. This episode was a classic example of what Trek would never ever have done and which was just delightful.

    But first, the griping.

Carter looks terrible with this hair style. I have loved other women with this cut but not Carter!!

And to continue this in depth episode analysis:

Janet. Frasier. You are so gorgeous.

Now to the gritty. Carter is married to a seemingly decent bloke who is actually a schmuck. I love how O'Neill is so understated in his sarcastic petty jealousy about Carter's husband. After the thrill of O'Neill I am sure this guy is dead dull and don't we all suspect that this had a hand in propelling her towards the Stargate in her big CHANGE TIME plan?

I know I would change time to get something better than that guy. The Aschen really screwed up here because if Carter had had kids she might have not been so keen to wipe out their existence through her slingshot around the sun flare. But the husband? pfft..

    Thoroughly enjoyed this.

I liked the episode, but it had one glaring problem. Everyone would've noticed sterility in a few months when the pregnancy rate dropped. Lots of specialists do nothing but work with pregnancies, and shortly after that the nurses in the maternity wards would notice that they haven't seen a baby in, oh, a few months. A more believable twist would've been that the technlogy caused second-generation sterility, so that none of the kids being born could have kids. But even that would give them a couple of decades to correct the problem through further intervensions, perhaps using Asgard cloning technology. Also missing was the fact that the Asgard would probably not let such a thing happen.

So other than it not quite making complete logical sense and not quite conforming to what's already been established (really those are minor nitpics), it was a great episode, as evidence by the fact that none of those nitpicks really mattered when you watched it. :)

Odd fact. When they first started with the story, they were putting the accent on the first syllable, "ashen". Someone then put the accent on the second syllable to make them sound like a race of people, and it made much more sense to everyone, hiding the true nature of the threat. "Ashen" as a regular word is how bubonic plauge victims were described, and it still triggers a reaction. I think the episode might have one instance where the first pronunciation was used.

I just assumed there was a mind numbing spell cast over the humans so that they never thought about or looked too closely at the almost complete absence of babies in the maternity wards

As Carter and Frasier point out when they discover the sterility, the Aschen likely have total control over the media, so even if someone talks about decrease of births, they are likely quickly discredited.

Absolute Power: So it seems when two vaguely brownish people have a baby BUT they both have snakes in their heads their offspring is Asian. I do hope this fascinating biological factlet is explained in a future episode. Of course the other explanation is that the Harcesis can make himself look however he likes and so took a pleasing image from the temple folk he was hanging out with.

Thank goodness for his foster mom because it seems he could really screw things up for a lot of people if he didn't have all that mental discipline.
