RIP Mr. Throne. A fine character actor with an awful lot of credits to his name. A success by any means.

To me he'll always be Noah Bain from It Takes A Thief.

    RIP

He was offered the doctor's role in "The Cage." He said no because he believed that the first or second leads in a TV show had a future, but if you play the third lead or lower, all your future job offers will be down at that level.

To support this theory, Throne cited Paul Fix (Dr Piper in WNM), who wrote a book called "Third Man Through the Door" about spending his whole career in third-lead parts. But Fix was never going to be a star regardless. And look at Lee Majors. He started in supporting parts and climbed the ladder to play first lead in THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN and THE FALL GUY. So I think Throne's theory was completely bogus. You've either got star quality or you don't.

Anyway, Throne loved the script for "The Cage." He wanted to play Spock but Nimoy already had it (thank God). So he offered to voice the Keeper. It's in his STARLOG interview (Issue 190, May 1993).

umm.... wha? Paul Fix may have been the biggest star to ever grace Star Trek.
Leading man, no, But star? Big time.

Anyway, back on topic... this just sucks. What a distinctive presence ha always had.

Absolutely. Paul Fix was a major, major motion picture character actor long before TV was even around. He started at the end of the silent movie era and moved seamlessly through talking motion pictures and then TV.

It is character actors like him and Malachi Throne that added so much life and texture to any movie or TV project.

You mean he was a supporting actor who got a lot of work (especially in westerns). But I'm not aware that he ever got the lead role in a TV series or movie. I was using star to mean leading man, which is what Malachi Throne was talking about.

Wasn't he in the early running to play Picard?

    Anyway, RIP Mr. Throne.

Any coincidence that both he and Gene Coon ended up working on the early years (1 1/2 seasons, I think) of It Takes a Thief?

He also had Star Wars connections too, as he was the announcer in the very first Star Wars trailer, the one that proclaimed, "Somewhere in space, this may all be happening right now".

Did Throne do much voice work for cartoons? I'm vaguely recalling a cartoon character voice or narrator that could have been him. I can hear his voice but not place it.
