Does watching movies on netflix's instant watch detract from the number of DVDs I can order for my plan? or does it add to my subscription fee with each movie or TV show I watch? Or is it without additional fee?

    Help would be appreciated! Thx!

It is free. They changed it several months ago so that you can watch as many as you want.

Oh, how convenient! Nice. Even though the quality is a bit grainy, its nice to be able to watch, say Jeremiah!

    Yeah, I love it.

I love how they changed it to unlimited. It USED to be every dollar you spent you got an hour of instant viewing.

But now...All free, all the time!

And how many movies they have! Tv shows!

    I'm in love with Netflix.

And I also firmly believe, internet distribution is the future of renting.

You HAVE to be using IE to watch, by the way. Get the add on for Firefox that lets you switch rendering engines so you don't have to open the hideous thing.

Outside of Law & Order: SVU, Quantum Leap, and THX-1138... there's not really that much stuff worth watching. There are a handful of popular independent films though.

I get regular DVD quality, crystal clear.

It all depends on the quality of your download speed.

I'll add: Some people get NetFlix for the DVDs and use the instant view as a nice little perk. I use NetFlix for the instant view, and consider the physical DVDs to be a nice little (but nearly unnecessaty) perk.

Add #2: I hear rumor that NetFlix is looking into the feasibility of streaming it's Instant View service over Xbox Live!

Point of order: It's only free and unlimited as long as your DVD plan is unlimited, even if you are only on the "One DVD out at a time" plan. IIRC all but the ONE super-cheap plan falls under this category.

Over 6000 movies and you say there's not really that much stuff worth watching?

    From my queue alone:
    High Plains Drifter
    last Tango In Paris
Once Upon A Time In America
    Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Hitchcock)
    Vertigo
The Man Who Knew Too Much
    Doctor Who
    Night Watch
    Day Watch
    My Blue Heaven
    Chariots of Fire
    Searching For Bobby Fisher
    Ben Hur
    Team America

There are PLENTY of movies on the Watch Instantly thing.
A TON of TV and Films.

I was watching La Vie En Rose yesterday.

My question is, does it work on DSL or do you need a faster connection?

DSL will work just fine, but faster is better.

Unless viewed at a small resolution, regular DVD is rather grainy most of the time. (Artifact and image loss obscure a great deal of detail.) Do you watch the videos on full screen, or only in a small window?

I don't know about that, a quick search turned up some of these fun flicks/series:

    Batman: Return of the Joker
    Ben-Hur
    Clash of the Titans
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    Dead Like Me (series)
    Dexter (series)
    Ghostbusters
    Hellboy (both animated movies)
    Hellraiser
    Men in Black
    Oh God!
    Seaquest DSV (series)
    Short Circuit
    Superman
    The Italian Job
    Time Bandits
    Weeds (series)

I personally think it's great and adds a lot of value to my subscription.

I love it. Basically I love everything about Netflix. The library of instant viewing is constantly growing, so between it and the DVD's I never run out of things to watch. I've been going through the Star Trek series (Voy, DS9 (currently on), ENT (next) ) with my wife and we use instant if we are feeling a movie.

Like Chaos Descending, I use Netflix for the streaming movies and have the physical disks as a perk.Plus, with my 6Mbps DSL connection, I get crystal clear quality on my 23" Acer LCD flat panel monitor (1680x1050 resolution) at full screen.

Doesn't instant viewing only work on PCs using Internet Explorer?

Useless for me. How about throwing us mac users a bone?

Sadly not yet. It has to do with Netflix's use of Microsoft DRM and Windows Media Player.

I love Instant Watch. Not only do I get a good dose of older Doctor Who, but it's also how I got into Dexter! :techman: When it breaks, though... oi, don't even get me started.

I've had great success with the instant viewing, I have my computer hooked up to my plasma tv in the living room and I really enjoy the quality. Although I do agree there are not a lot of choices for most movies I'm interested in seeing. But I did recently watch the original Knight Rider's 2-hr pilot and an episode of the A-Team!

    I love Instant Watch.

When it was first launched there wasn't much content on there, but now there's TONS of great stuff.

I watch Netflix movies more through IW than I do physical disks, now. And the recent change to unlimited viewing is great.

I really wish they didn't use Microsoft's DRM so that you could watch from Macs or from Linux. But overall, it's great.

Just watched on instant watch, recommended to everyone:

    The Man from Earth (2007)
The Nazis: A warning from History (fascinating documentary series on the rise of Nazism in post WWI germany, through the fall of Hitler)
