My daughter was just the right age to get into the Powerpuff Girls and I really enjoyed the cartoon as well.. The problem with the movie was that it was an overblown origin story that even my daughter quickly grew bored with.

I know the thought is that you have to do origin stories even with well established characters to bring the unfamiliar masses up to speed, but I kind of doubt there were many people who went to see the PPG Movie not knowing who they were...

I watched it on Netflix a while back, and I enjoyed it. I know nothing about Popeye, so I can't judge it as an adaptation, but as a movie I thought it was pretty fun.

By the way Greg Cox, my remarks about how bad TDKR is has nothing to do with your novelization. I actually haven't read it but you obviously care for your craft and you no doubt did a bang-up job. I'm a writer myself so I really respect what you do. I'd would've taken the gig myself even after having read the atrocious script.

    Best: Ghost World, Kick-Ass.
    Worst: Super Girl.

Super Girl doesn't have a single redeeming thing in it. Not even Peter O'Toole can save it. I suppose straight guys and lesbians might enjoy staring at Helen Slater, but other than that . . .

Kick-Ass is one of the worst films I've ever seen. It's supposed to be a smart satire, but the script its awful, and the furthest thing from sharp. Though not a comic book movie, it's clear that the makers were trying to emulate the satire of a film like Thank You For Smoking but they failed bad. That film was sharp and witty and always self-aware.

Supergirl is innocent fun for people that might have seen wit when it came out. It wasn't good but it certainly wasn't awful. children might like it.

I liked the V movie better than the V comic book. And I read the comic book first.

Yes. It's not even that the LoEG is a bad adaption. It's just a bad movie.

And here I thought the themes were COMPLETELY different, and changing the characters as drastically as they did didn't help.

Too many things were changed to making things way too Americanized and much more "hollywood".

Like the movie or not (I liked it for the most part), it's tough to say the themes and point of the story didn't stray a bit.

I wouldn't say Supergirl is "THE" worst, but the plot of the story was ridiculous, with the bad witch story, and how she comes to and leave earth [jump out of and back in the water] WTF
would have been better if the villain had been an evil genius.

OK now my choices of bests and worstes are.

    "Bests
    Captain America "The First Avenger"
    Batman Begin
    Batman The Dark Knight
    Blade trilogy
X-Men trilogy "also Wolverine Origin and X-Men First Class"
Fantastic Four 1 and 2 "yeah i know some hate them, but i like them""

    "Worste
    Captain America [the 1991 version]"

Yup. It's a fairly well-made movie, but it completely missed the point of the comic imho.

In Supergirl's defense, go back and read a bunch of early Silver Age "Supergirl" comics. The movie really isn't all that different in tone from the original Mort Weisinger-era comics, which were indeed aimed at children . . .

It's not like they were adapting Alan Moore or something . . . or even Lee/Kirby!

(Anybody else remember the issue where Supergirl used the Super-Computer at the Fortress of Solitude to find herself the perfect boyfriend--who turned out to be a girl in disguise? That's what the original SUPERGIRL comics were like!)

Adapting Alan Moore is always doomed to failure.

If the movie sucks, it sucks.

If the movie doesn't suck, it "misses the point".

If nothing else SUPERGIRL has a terrific score by Jerry Goldsmith.

As bad as Supergirl was, I think it was still better than Superman III and IV.
