Apart from Voyager the whole of 24th century Trek seems to be getting more closely intertwined and long may it continue ! There's loads of room for the NF crew in the mix...
You could always read or at least look at the comic books first. Do you read Titan, or any of the Relaunches? I don't really see where the use of new aliens in NF is any worse than their use in those series. Hell there are a lot more new, and unusual aliens in the first couple Titan books, than in the whole NF series.
I was just looking at Memory Beta, and read a descreption of the Brethern. Seriously, they were a body armour that fires pulse-weapons from the palms of their hands?? Iron Man anyone?? I'm so glad I stopped reading NF......
^Well, I can't speak to whether PAD was deliberately alluding to Iron Man, but I think it's rather common in SF, comics, and animation for various characters to have weapons that fire from their palms or hands, for instance the Goa'uld's hand device from Stargate, so that alone doesn't prove he was. It's not even limited to Iron Man within Marvel; Doctor Doom and the Sentinels do the same (which suggests it's one of Jack Kirby's many characteristic design tropes).
Did Jack Kirby create the Sentinels? I had no idea. I thought they came along after Jack's time. Cool
Sounds cool to me (and more than plausable, given Trek's technology). I look forward to reaching those books!
Since NF is my favorite lit-original Trek series, I hope that Peter David gets to continue (or at least complete) the series.
Every installment of "New Frontier" has had elements that are reminiscent of comic books and TV situation comedies, along with plenty of science fiction. This balance has neither increased (unless you count the addition of Arex and M'Ress, timeslipped characters from Filmation's TAS and PAD's own DC Comics issues of "Star Trek"), nor decreased. Making a decision about a book series based on some fan's brief Memory Beta wiki update is never wise. And what's so wrong about a 24th century science fiction character's armour being reminiscent of the gadget-filled gauntlets of Iron Man or Doctor Doom?
On the other side of the fence he created one of the greatest comic book villains ever...complete with the coolest energy beam ever! master of the beam
I looked and apprently they actually fired their weapons from their wrists, not their palms, but the first image I got in my head when I read about the Brethren was the Kull from Stargate SG-1.
I just find it hard to believe that dread Darkseid, lord of Apokolips, would actually use the phrase "the total wipeout." Who knew he was a surfer?
Just look at those red eyes, too much chlorine from the artifical Apokoliptian waves no doubt. That's the true reason he wants earth, the killer surf
Kirby (who would have been 95 years old today, by the way) was a creative genius. What he was not, however, was Strong On Dialogue.
On the topic of New Frontier, I just noticed Blind Man's Bluff and Treason take place in 2380. I've already read Treason. Can Blind Man's Bluff be read without spoiling Destiny or anything in DS9 relaunch post-Worlds? Just Yes or No please (or use spoiler tags). Thanks Love, Christin
I remember the exact moment that I decided I was done with NF. It was when PAD brought Arex and M'Ress to the future just so he could make a lame joke about them having an animated conversation.
