Inspired by a thread started by {Emilia} in the Narnia-like section of the board known as TNZ, I'd like to take some suggestions on possible topics for discussion here in Miscellaneous, since things have become rather stagnant discussion-wise as of late.

I'd prefer if we solely provided suggestions for things you'd like to see discussed rather than pointing out existing topics or threads you dislike, since we don't want to scare anyone off or prevent them from having the kind of threads they prefer. Keep it positive and constructive and focused on what you'd like to see rather than what you dislike, please. If you disagree with a suggestion that is made and feel you have to say something, try and do so politely.

Sometimes you might want to discuss something but don't feel confident or sure about starting a thread on your own. Well, this might be an opportunity to put an idea out there and maybe have someone else start it for you. Perhaps you don't think the subject matter is allowed, like how many people don't think political or controversial subjects are allowed in Miscellaneous even though they are.

Please be mindful that the goal is to generate ongoing discussion of a meaningful or extensive nature. Which is not to say that discussions of what you just ate or listened to don't have their place and aren't perfectly acceptable, but the responses are usually just one line answers and not any kind of recurring dialogue. Nor should my comment be taken to mean the suggestions all have to be super serious. A creative writing thread or something else fun is welcome too. The goal is just to get some positive and lasting discussion flowing.

I look forward to seeing your suggestions. :)

I love the idea of a creative writing thread. Perhaps there could be subjects/genres/general ideas/you get the idea of the week or month. Keeping on the creative track, didn't there used to be an art thread? There are a lot of creative souls on this board and it would be good to have an active thread for people to share their arts and crafts as well as to ask for advice/opinions and discuss their favourite medium, what inspires them, and so forth.

^ Thanks for your suggestions. :techman: I went ahead and bumped the existing "Casual Artwork" thread which had been dead since March, and started a new Creative Writing thread, incorporating your idea about possible monthly theme writing projects that could grow into a new Miscellaneous contest similar to the avatar threads but for writing. Hopefully that generates some interest.

    Those are some good ideas!

How about a thread for suggestions for discussion threads? Meaning an area for members to put suggestions in and then we can go from there.

Well since we don't have people like Barcalow or Jayson or even Baggins anymore, it's gonna be harder to start really interesting threads, innit? ;)

^ Ah, I see. Your plan is simple, yet also impossible. Very efficient! :techman: :D

The last time I visited this board was several years ago. I'm seeing the same threads on the go now as back then. Stagnant it feels.

My suggestion is to stimulate more creativity. Allow someone to start a thread about something they're making. Like a project log. Let it serve as an inspiration to others to start their own projects, with their own logs.

That could be a great source of interest, entertainment, and discussion.

That's an interesting idea - heck, I've been in the midst of my own project (to walk through every neighborhood in Manhattan and photograph what I see there). I could certainly start a thread for it, post and annotate pictures, provide updates on my progress, etc. My only concern about the general policy is ... would those kinds of threads become too overwhelming? And would people only be posting in their own, rather than visiting others'? (I ask, because while I like the idea, I'm genuinely curious about how others might see such threads.)

Is any topic really off limits in Misc. ? I thought the main provsio was to keep it civil and on topic, and not resort to attacking the poster.

Doh! /facepalm Sorry about that. Been so busy today that I forgot what thread I was in.

That's a good idea :). For those smaller news events.

    How about world news events?

A creative projects thread for people who make things would be nice, but not necessarily generate discussion. One of the issues is that any topic that generated genuine discussion ultimately got given its own forum. People don't discuss hot topics here for fear of falling into trolling and flaming where it is forbidden, and anything else (sport, TV, books etc) that people routinely discuss is covered elsewhere.

The photo hunt thread was good but seems quiet at the moment, I don't know if there's any mileage in other sorts of treasure hunt (say a book hunt thread). Though potentially these things are games and should be kept to the lounges.

Personally, I miss the bar, the tearoom and of course the fireside chats. Though these days we don't even seem to have people to roast.

We had a book scavenger hunt in August last year. I did try a second one a month or two later that wasn't very successful but maybe it was too soon after.

I also had a household items scavenger hunt.

Re: What Kind of Topics Would You Like to See in Miscellaneous?s

Been thinking things through and now, as my shoulder is getting better and I can finally type, I could start some thread similar to those i have in the past. Would anyone like any of the following

    A) A soap opera thread similar to Miscellaneous Street

    B) A twenty questions or similar thread
    C) A categories game thread

B and C would depend on the rules on game threads in Misc. I have been restricted to the lounge for my Categories games in the past and there aren't enough people in the Lounges for them work properly.

    D) I have found that people seem to enjoy 'lists' threads. This is when someone has a book at home, for example, I had a copy of "100 Classic Toys" and people had to guess what toys were in the 100. It was a rather nostalgic thread. I also did "1001 Children's Books You Should Read Before You Grow Up' but I did that in General Media. I also did, a long time ago, "100 Most Famous Photographs". This sort of thread doesn't work if the list is online and, if it is a smaller list (i.e 100), you limit people to naming one or two at a time. I do have a copy of "100 Great Fictional Detectives" but unfortunately it was published in 1991, so misses all the newest detectives.
