That's not what the thread title says, it treats them as two different things.
Well, for that matter, the title of the thread is a statement and the OP itself is a question. Titles don't always reflect content 100%.
I wouldn't call belief in the soul "superstition"--and I'm an atheist. I'd call it wrong from my perspective, but the philosophical belief in the soul is not a childish or fearful one, IMO. For the purpose of discussing Trek, I decided that we need to accept what most of the characters we know accept, and I'd hazard a guess that Kirk, Picard, and many others do in fact believe in some undying part of themselves that could provide continuity of self in the situations I've mentioned--if it could be transferred.

And yes, I'd say mind and soul are two separate things in this context.
