Fewer good strategy games?? I have to take issue with that. This is practically a golden age.
You have the various Paradox games: Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, etc. Civ V is still going strong. The Wargame series is great. The Fallen Enchantress games are good, along with King's Bounty. For space, you've got Sins of a Solar Empire (granted, a somewhat broken series with the latest installments), Distant Worlds (which is fucking amazing by the way
), AI War, SPAZ, etc. Then there's the Total War games (Shogun 2 is good.) This is to say nothing of Starcraft 2, the Earth 2140/50/60 series, Darwinia, Supreme Commander, Tropico, the Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War games, XCOM: Enemy Unknown (which everyone who enjoys gaming should own, period), etc.
I'll grant that I don't know if you've played all those already, or if they are your cup of tea, but over the past several years there's been an amazing plethora of strong strategy games. I'm certainly not hurting for action in that genre.
