, that's a beautiful building but it seems strangely out of proportion for a gothic church, compared to those we have this side of the Channel. Do you happen to know if it was planned like this?

Off the top of my head, I'm sure it was planned. Square turrets are common on medieval (and earlier) English churches. Certainly the interior of the cathedral is beautifully proportioned, at least to my amateur eye. In fact, to my eye the churched you linked looks too tall and skinny.
