Yes, of course that's the REAL reason. I was thinking there might be an in-character reason, as well. But the real reason could be the only one.
T'Pau could have simply assumed that Spock would have mentioned this detail to Kirk and McCoy (considering that they're supposed to be his best friends).
"Let's give it to Riker. He'll eat anything!"
