As for places to avoid, the city of East St. Louis is a rather famous, blighted, and dangerous area.
That's because I was born there.
Last time I went through Kirkwood, railroad tracks ran across Lindbergh Road and crossing gates came down.
And I think the Museum of Transportation is near there. When I was last there in the 80s, you could still climb into some of the old railroad cars.
