Very nice job of addressing the ethical quandary faced by those who serve in the military. How much is too much? What is a 'measured response' or 'surgical strike?'
Young Rhory must do more than sit through a lecture in ethics. He must wrestle with the realities of warfare where people die horrible deaths and 'collateral damage' is a polite term to sterilize the death of babies and other innocents.
I like tweed-jacket guy. He's a bit like Boothby himself - helping young Rhory gain a bit of perspective, bitter though that may be. In many ways, this story is difficult to read - which means you have done an excellent job.
