Einstein's theory that "Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another" and the way thought patterns are formed (electrical) has always kept me open minded to an afterlife.
I've heard this a lot, but I'm afraid that if you talk to any physicist they can explain better than I that this is not what conservation of energy means. It is not about any kind of life force or the energy of thought patterns. In fact, the conservation of energy helps to disprove the claim that a spirit or soul leaves the body upon death as energy, because if it did, then it could be measured. As iguana
said, this doesn't disprove life after death, it just can't be used as evidence for life after death.
