I have complained that TOS Kirk, Spock, and McCoy stole lines and jobs from better qualified sub-ordinates, that's true, but that was because I wanted those characters to develop their niche. The writers in NuTrek seem to be trying (too) hard to give the characters a niche so I think it's more an issue of balancing that with a degree of realism.
I wouldn't complain if Chekov was the go-to mouthpiece of engineering unless the actual chief got no lines at all. That makes literary sense and plot sense.
Plus there are degrees of complaint. Not every complaint is absolute. Even on the internet!
