I think you both are right about it being a poorly executed, not thought-out scene. It's unfortunate also that the Yangs are left not fully understanding what "one-named-Kirk" means, yet somehow the "holy words" will be obeyed. Well, I guess the episode had to end, so there wasn't really time for Kirk to get into better explanations..!
And this isn't the first time Kirk has broken some eggs and then left the omelette-making to some stunned natives.
