(Actually, way, way back, didn't Orci or someone say Eve's character was new to canon? Maybe not.)
Nope

TrekMovie.com: OK, I want to try and get something out of you that is actually new about the movie. Kind of like you did on the radio show but I will name a guest actor in the sequel and you will say if they are playing a new character you created or one from the original Star Trek canon.

Roberto Orci: OK, Iíll play.

TrekMovie.com: OK letís start with Alice Eve. Canon or new?

Roberto Orci: Canon

TrekMovie.com: Noel Clarke?

Roberto Orci: New

TrekMovie.com: I assume that also goes for Nanzeen Contractor, who plays his wife?

Roberto Orci: Yes, new.

TrekMovie.com: Peter Weller

Roberto Orci: New.

TrekMovie.com: Joseph Gatt

Roberto Orci: New.

TrekMovie.com: OK and the big one, Benedict Cumberbatch.

In the prime universe, Carol Marcus is a brilliant molecular biologist dedicated to improving and even creating life. In the post-Nero universe, she's a weapons specialist. Leads me to believe that Starfleet and/or the Federation may have had a type of U.S. post-Sputnik campaign to get the best and brightest to go into the defense and security fields in the post-Nero world.
We don't know that much about Marcus' earlier life in the Prime universe. She could have started a weapons specialist there too, saw things she didn't like in Starfleet and changed her path in life.
Thanks for finding that exchange with Orci. I honestly couldn't remember for sure what he said.

Yeah that's true, we don't know anything about young Marcus in the prime universe. Further, a weapons specialist dedicated to creating devices that will kill may have a moment in her life when she decides to "give back" something to life and basically do a 180 in her profession.
