There's no honest and decent way to defend Thatcher's political career. Morally speaking, she earned for her passing all the compassion she exercised for Bobby Sands. Insisting on more is unjust. Besides, manners is not much of a virtue, all you need for that is hypocrisy. Politics already has enough, we don't need more coming out of graves.
It does seem appropriate to comment on her political career. She was a charmless, graceless version of Reagan. Since all Reagan had was movie star charisma, the less attractive, dowdy Thatcher had an amazing career in getting elected in the first place. She couldn't even fake being nice but the English still elected her!
What does that say about them?
On the other hand, I've never known whether only the Falklands War saved her by inspiring imperial bloodlust. Or whether people were really as indifferent to the IRA bombing in Brighton that nearly got her as it seemed here in the US at the time.
My epitaph is simple enough: Another one has escaped justice.
