Sorry guys. Didn't have my brain switched on. These characters would Irish-AMERICAN Catholics. I thinking of how things are in Ireland. My bad.
But, yes, here in the United States, Catholic children who do not attend a Catholic school usually go through religious training at their church until Confirmation (usually around 14 years old). Our Parish happens to call it PSR (Parish School of Religion). The classes are on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings between masses. My thirteen year-old son, who happens to be an alter boy, loves Castle and found that line hysterically funny.
