Kirk was sent on a mission and was going to complete that mission if at all possible. Kirk is chastised by the Organians and seems repentant to a degree at the end of the episode.

If a character is perfect from the get-go then there's nothing for them to learn during the course of the story and it can get dull pretty quick. I call it "Jean-Luc Picard Syndrome".
