I think one of the lessons of the episode was that things have changed, you have to let go of the sentimentality from the past. Something that was really a struggle last season is now obvious. Morgan's son died because of sentimentality, Carl almost died to hold on to the past. If they had picked up that hitchhiker they would have died. There was obviously something wrong about that guy. And even in the real world you might not pick him up.
