pointed upthread, Luke declared himself "a Jedi
" to the Emperor, and the film was called Return of the Jedi.
On the other hand, earlier in the film, Luke introduced himself to Jabba as a "Jedi Knight
In ANH, Ben said,
"A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father. Now the Jedi are all but extinct. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force."
So, even the films of the OT use Jedi
as a noun too, sometimes,
so it's not strictly a binary thing. Maybe that's what's caused some of the misunderstanding.
