You can see the followers sitting in the background
here. Watching this shot in motion I count about 4 or 5 people sitting down, and there's a shadow that could be more followers sitting opposite. A few seconds earlier though there's clearly no-one on the other side of the shuttle when Kirk etc are all wandering about the back.
