A lot of people think preachers are crooks. Dad was only getting $125 a week (1970 dollars), bought his own car, and the church provided a house. He worked 7 day a week, visiting new members, the sick, etc., 3 services on Sunday, 1 on Wednesday which was basically a business meeting with the deacons. He disliked television evangelists and considered them crooks. It was his only career from 1927-1970, except when he enlisted for WW2.
My first job in 1970 paid $103.50 for 40 hours/week, and I had no experience, but it was a union job.
The real money was in church supplies-- pulpits, altars, baptistries, chairs/pews, hymnals, communion supplies.
