You have to think of it as a generic sci-fi romp.
I'm pretty lukewarm on the film. Some things work (I thought the casting was good for the most part, the directing), other things didn't (Spock/Uhura, Nero's motivation, some massive plot holes, the totality of the Starfleet Academy scenes).
I've seen it several times over the last three years, but its been about a year since I watched it all the way through. I doubt I'll revisit it again until just before
Star Trek Into Darkness.
