Venice - food, culture, just sheer general awesomeness.

I feel like this is grabbing at the low hanging fruit, here, but Venice.

Venice is awesome indeed, but it's a bitch to live there. I have a few friends who live and work in the city, and even the simplest tasks are mind-mindbogglingly difficult. For example, no cars, no motorbikes, no bicycles: which means you can't buy more groceries than you can transport in your own hands, up and down a few bridges with steep steps, crossing over bad-smelling canals (which double also as the city sewage system). Ah, and all your groceries are crazy expensive, since all goods must be transported into the city by
motorboats. And the list is long!

Second place would be Bolzano (also in Italy). It was by pulling some serious strings that we got to go there at all, but I'm so glad I did.

Bolzano/Bozen is very nice, too! You really get the feeling of being on the frontier between Mediterranean and Continental Europe.
