It was my idea. I had some ideas for the first book of the
Cold Equations trilogy, and while doing research I discovered lots of similar ground had been covered by
Immortal Coil. So I read that book and realized I could rework my trilogy proposal as a sequel to that tale. Later, I saw the possibility to expand the concept to build the entire trilogy off that premise. My editors were dubious of the proposal, but I eventually sold them on it.
