If that (pandering) was how it made you feel the first time you witnessed it, ('cause IMO, 'first impressions' are the yardstick by which it's judged) then by all means, you're entitled to your opinion.
For me, and I'll be completely honest... it did bring me out of the story for a moment while it sank in - this ain't your fathers Star Trek
. OKAY. That ain't right, my mind screamed! I instructed it to shut up, I couldn't hear the movie. I sat listening and watching for the typical emotional cues that kind of 'crap' is intended to evoke...
Nothing. I wasn't offended. They pulled it off, IMO.
That is pretty much my feelings for the entire film; they pulled it off!
