104. The Rules of the Game (B+)
One of the highest-regarded films of Jean Renoir, and an acclaimed film in general (the only film to appear in all seven
Sight & Sound top tens, having reached as high as the #2 position), it's...perfectly fine. Well-acted and amusing, and one can see that its cinematography would have been quite an advance in 1939, but its satire, considered savagely biting at the time, is pretty old-hat now, and that lessens its impact.
